hay guise whats up. Heard about this college in my AP Computer Science class today and figured I'd share it with any of you who actually care about going into these kinds of careers.
Basically, Full Sail University is a college that provides courses and degrees in subjects such as Game Design (Storytelling), Game Development (Programming), Game Art (Drawing), Media Design, Computer Animation, Recording Engineering, etc. From the way the saleswoman presented it, FSU sounded like a pretty good school (but that's a salesperson's job, is it not? Making things sound better than they actually are...), but it's not without its pros and cons.
Pros
It's located in Florida, so it's nice and warm and not too far from home. (To those of you that live in Georgia, that is.)
It's partnered with Apple, so anyone not majoring in Game Development gets a cheap MacBook Pro. (Game Developers get PCs for obvious reasons.)
The strange course scheduling they have almost guarantees that youare stuck with get to know your classmates well.
For our underachievers, they don't require SAT/ACT scores (the founder was dyslexic, apparently) and they have a minimum GPA requirement of 2.0 (meaning you only have to pass high school. Srsly.)
They provide a way to get a Master's degree in 21 - 32 months, so you could be out of college and have a job at a studio of some sort by the time you're 20.
Many of their graduates get jobs instantaneously and go on to work for Pixar, Ubisoft, and similar entertainment companies. These same students have directed the Saw series (which sucks, I know) and designed sound/visuals for Pirates of the Carribean, Desperate Housewives, bla bla bla...
Cons
It's a private school, so expect to pay between 30 and 75 grand for tuition.
Depending on how you look at it, this can be either a pro or con. Since you can get your degree in such a short time, the workload is intense. Expect to have classes 5-6 days a week 5-7 hours a day.
It's not regionally accredited, so don't expect to have an easy time transferring from there to a public school.
It was founded in 1979, so it's not as old as some of the more traditional schools.
Their Master's degree programs are fairly recent (2007), so don't bother looking for too many graduates from Master's programs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm personally partial to engineering and business myself, so FSU is not the school for me, but I figure since some of you fancy animation and storytelling (obviously), you might want to check it out, especially if you have yet to figure out what you want to do when you grow up.
