Indeed. And that one dude deserves quality, fan-derived prose.

I have come across something intriguing within the world of Evangelion, something that I failed to notice until I tried analyze both Kaworu and Rei. In my delvings, I have determined that Rei does not value the individual because she is incapable of understanding the individual. Rei is and has always been multiple. There were always hundreds of Rei's ready to replace her. Thus, were Instrumentality placed into her hands(s) she would readily implement it, not understanding the value of individual life.
Humanity is a strange Angel, as described by Misato and Kaworu: a single Angel separated by AT Fields into individuals. Despite this, we still have one collective soul, as evidenced by the End of Evangelion. If we were not one soul, we could not be united. Like Rei, we are one, made multiple.
This is where I noticed a paradox, or something. As humans, we value individuals. Odd that we would, considering we are actually one split apart. Rei, the vessel for the soul of our creator, Lilith, does not share our view. She sees, perhaps correctly, that individuals do not exist. Rather, she does not understand that individuals do not exist, just as Lilith does not. We are one Angel, Lilim.
The other Angels, however, are strange: they are all individuals, yet cannot act like individuals. Each Angel may look and act uniquely, but they all have a single directing instinct: to eliminate humans.
The paradox is thus: Angels, being distinct, separate entities, cannot think or act as distinct separate entities, and that humans, in reality one multiple entity, is capable of behaving as distinct, separate entities.
It is also interesting to not that Rei and Kaworu the avatars for their collective Angels would behave in such a way as to both adhere to the mindset of their proginators, while acting destructively for their respective species. Kaworu, in valuing the individual, rejects the Angels in favor of humanity, thus dooming the Angels. Despite behaving as an Angel (insofar as to being a separate entity) he has acted very humanly, while Rei, behaving as Lilith would have (viewing humans collectively) also behaves in a distinctly nonhuman manner.
I wonder, did Hidekei Anno create this paradox on purpose, or was it the natural progression or things?

I'm pretty sure that was intentional. Perhaps we should delve into it and milk it for what it's worth.

(Feeling bored during Newspaper. Then stuff happened, so I figured I'd give you a prototype scene for Mana's introduction. Feel free to rip it to shreds and tell me that you have something totally different planned.)
Shinji sat down in some warm sand. The waves caressed the beach, providing a therapeutic symphony for his ears. He shoved his hands into the white sand relishing the coolness beneath the surface. He needed this. Today hadn’t been the best day of his life.
“I should have known it wouldn’t have worked out anyway,” Shinji said to himself. His thoughts returned to Asuka. He could swear that his cheek still burned from where she slapped him. Maybe it was just the sun.
He turned on his side and gave a stare towards a moving rock. No, a turtle. A sea turtle. The creature hoisted itself across the sand, eventually reaching the waves.
Shinji knew that he had to be dreaming. He figured that this dream world would soon shatter after he saw through the ruse, but no. It stayed.
“Weird.”
“What is?”
Shinji turned to his left to find a girl wearing a yellow one-piece swimsuit. Her short brown hair blew with the wind. Shinji couldn’t help but feel somewhat disappointed. Regardless, he figured that he’d humor his preconscious and answer her question.
“This dream: I can’t shake myself up.”
“This is a dream?” she asked, “That explains why those folks in town won’t talk to me.”
This was odd. Shinji knew that projections only acted like people went there were people around to fool. Why was this one acting so strange?
“Who are you?” he asked.
“I’m… uh… darn.” Her eyes widened. She seemed to be panicking slightly. Finally she said, “I… I don’t think I have a name…”
“You’re just a projection of my imagination. I guess I never bothered to give you one.”
“I’m not real?” She glanced at her hands. “Great… I guess that explains a lot of things really, huh?”
She tried to crack a smile, but instead started sobbing. Shinji was beyond confused at this point. Should he really waste his time trying to cheer up someone who doesn’t even exist? But, Cobb always said that construct in your mind could sometimes spiral out of your control. Mal was proof of that, but this was completely different. This girl wasn’t trying to kill him.
“Hey, come on,” Shinji nudged her shulder, “Don’t be like that.”
“You don’t get it,” she choked out between sobs, “You won’t disappear when you wake up.”
“Then I won’t wake up,” Shinji sighed, “I honestly don’t want to wake up. Things are so nice here.”
“You’d really rather stay here than go back to your friends?” Her question hit Shinji hard. He could actually stand Kensuke and Toji. Rei, if not strange, was alright as well. But as far as he was concerned, he never wanted to see Asuka again.
“Yeah, I’d much rather stay here.”
The girl smiled. Shinji blushed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Leaving the beach behind, they decided to wander into town. Tokyo-3's usual skyscrapers had been replaced with simple one story buildings. The street layout, however, remained the same. They continued to the heart of the city, mostly just making idle chitchat.
“So what's it like in the real world?” she turned her head towards Shinji and cocked it to one side.
“To be honest, it's overrated. People are jerks. Some are okay, but...” Shinji closed his eyes, trying not to think about Asuka.
“What's wrong?”
“It's nothing.” Shinji tried to hold back his tears. It didn't work. “It doesn't matter where I go. I'm still pathetic.”
“I... I don't think-”
“You don't get it!” Shinji shouted, “My entire life is a joke! I never even wanted to be a pilot!” He stopped to catch his breath, his sobs wreaking havoc on his throat. “And now Asuka says that she can't stand the sight of me! I-”
Shinji's tirade was interrupted with the girl burying herself into his chest. Her arms were locked around his back to the point that he could swear that his arms were losing circulation.
“Please don't cry,” she said. She glanced up into his face. Her eyes began to water up. “Please... Just don't cry. I... I don't want to see you like this. You're the only person I have here. Please.” Shinji found himself returning her hug. He didn't want to let go. Ever.
“You know,” he said sniffling, “You really deserve a name.” She smiled.
“Promise me one thing,” she looked him straight in the eyes.
“What?”
“Don't forget about me when you wake up.” She leaned in, planting a kiss on his lips.
SHINJI AWOKE.
I don't know about like/dislike but I definitely am not going to have Mana aware of being in a dream world, at least not while its going on. She's there, but doesn't know it's a dream - like Shinji. When he realizes it's not real is when the entire thing fucking shatters around him. Or something. Mana's appearance outside the dream (well...yeah) is supposed to be a surprise to Shinji and reader. He fully expected to never see her again. This is our first clue into the mental health of Shinji.
While I press through the next chapter (which is weird, considering it's the first time I get to write a mind-labyrinth; why is my apathy kicking in now?) i have decided somethings about the next set, the Shamshe; set.
Rei will be important because they use her to track down the Angels that are hiding in people's minds. The MAGI detect spikes in AT Fields in the city, but only Rei is sensitive enough to pick out a specific person.
Mal is going to appear. She may or may not try an wreck things, but I know that she will help Shinji fight Shamshel. In a ridiculously awesome way.
can anyone do this for me: photoshop Mal sitting on the shoulder fin of Unit 01. Preferably like this: mal from when she's sitting on the balcony, about to let her shoe drop off her foot. Unit with the progressive knife out.
