because when misato woke up, Shinji wasn't making food like he usually does, so she went to see if he was asleep. He's not there. Next, she goes to make sure Asuka is there. Needless to say, she finds the two of them...together. All she can do is sigh and walk away, though she writes a note and sticks it to the inside of the door: "We need to talk" But when it comes time to talk, she really doesn't know what to say and just leaves. Shinji and Asuka have an awkward "Well, what now?" conversation, which doesn't go anywhere. Asuka goes out with Hikari like she had planned to (because guess it's saturday or sunday) and they decide to talk later. The person who has been Shinji's friend this entire time is Ariadne, and he knows she's still with Arthur, so he figures she can help him figure things out. He ends up blurting it out like that

Technology to rival the PASIV. Supposedly offering a way to reliably perform inception without the need to go so many layers down like in the movie.
Naturally, the test will somehow go wrong, and the field the device emits starts implanting questionable ideas into others. Or, perhaps more realistically, if the technology goes public, it becomes an incredibly easy way to engineer saboteurs against both NERV and SEELE...so they want it destroyed.
/just throwing out an idea
Alright, Ultra Sonic 007 threw this idea out there.
Here's what I propose. This technology exists, but the JSSDF doesn't make it public.
That way we can have the pilots kidnapped and the JSSDF can attempt to perform all sorts of shit on them.

Oh, I guess this goes here as well, huh?
-------
“Hey, Shinji, do you want to kiss me?
At first, he wasn’t sure he heard her correctly; he did have his earbuds in. Removing one, he turned in Asuka’s direction and said the only thing he could think of: “What?”
She had her head down on the kitchen table and had been steadily tapping out the seconds for the past quarter of an hour or so. Shinji could hear it through his music, but it didn’t bother him. Strangely enough, most of the time the taps were in time with the music. Or close enough.
“You know,” she said, sitting up. “A kiss. Do you want to kiss me?” She enunciated each word to make sure he heard. “Don’t tell me you’ve never had a kiss before?”
“Well, uh, no.”
“Come one then; you’re not scared, are you?”
Shinji jumped up at once. “I’m not afraid!”
“Good because here I come.” Shinji felt his heart speed up faster than he thought possible as Asuka’s face closed the distance between them. It was made all the worse when she hovered just out of reach. “Stop breathing on me, it tickles me nose.” Shinji barely had time to formulate a response to the odd order before she simply pinched his nose shut and mashed her lips against his.
Shinji barely had time to enjoy the moment because his mind was racing, trying to recall the movie he’d watched with Misato – the kiss didn’t happen like this, exactly. No one was holding the other’s nose while it went on. And music. There was usually music. But there was something he was forgetting, something that you’re supposed to do. The image formed in his mind as a generic picture, not from any one movie, but rather a instinctual action. Put your arms around her. Despite the fact that he was in desperate need of oxygen, Shinji brought his arms up and wrapped them around Asuka. The effect was instantaneous.
He felt her relax, in his arms, all the tension suddenly draining away. She let go of his nose and melted into his embrace, nearly causing him to stumble backward; thankfully, he was up against the wall. Slowly, he felt her arms find their way around his side and wrap around his back, pulling him into her. They stood like that, entwined for a length of time that seemed an eternity to Shinji.
Suddenly, they broke apart. Asuka stumbled backward into the table and for a moment simply stared at Shinji. Then she touched her lips with her hand and smiled. “Not bad,” she said. “I’ve had better.”
Shinji sat back down in a huff.
“Oh don’t act all hurt,” she chided him. “That was your first kiss; I can’t expect you to be good at it. Not bad for a first try, though.”
Well, thank you, American cinema, he thought sarcastically. He was halfway through the motion of replacing his earbuds when the front door opened.
“Kids?” he heard Kaji call. “We’re back.”
“Kaji!” Asuka immediately bounded away to greet him. Shinji stood back up with relative indifference and left his SDAT player against the wall. He was just in time to see Kaji help a stumbling drunk Misato into her room.
“She’s had a bit much to drink, so take care of her, okay?” That was directed at Shinji. He nodded. “Thank you. Sorry to drop a drunk off with a couple of kids, but I have some work I need to get to.”
By this point, Asuka had latched herself onto Kaji’s arm. “Are you sure you can’t stay, just a little longer?”
“No, Asuka,” he replied with practiced patience, casually shrugging her off. “I have to go.”
She took his arm again. “Are you sure? Come one, stay.”
“Stop it, Asuka.” She jerked his arm away and kept walking. “I don’t have time for you right now.” That made her stop in her tracks. Shinji saw an expression form on her face that he had never seen before, but he didn’t have time to analyze it. He got the door for Kaji and waved him out. When he shut the door, Asuka hadn’t moved from her spot. And she was nearly shaking, wearing a face of something like anger.
“What’s wrong, Asuka?” he asked.
“Nothing’s wrong, idiot,” she snapped.
“Fine.” He turned to walk away when she caught his arm and stopped him. “Asuka?”
“Shinji…do you want to kiss me again?”
Yes.
“Are you sure you’re ok?”
“Do you want to kiss me or not?” She practically screamed the question at him.
“Yes, but – “ He didn’t get to finish his question. Asuka spun him around and took his face in her hands, pulling it to hers. She did so with such force that they both fell back and collided with the wall. This kiss was different from the other. The first had been tentative and nervous; this one was rushed and hungry. This time, Shinji felt her tongue find its way into his mouth.
Sometime during, she pushed them off from the wall and clumsily steered them down the hall. They spun and bumped from one wall to the other until Shinji lost his sense of direction. He heard a door slide open and felt greedy hands pull at his t-shirt. Somehow his hands found hers and tugged upward. Then he was falling backward and collided with a sleeping mat. He opened his eyes for the first time and beheld a shirtless Asuka, straddling him. The only thing he could think to say as she undid her bra was, “I don’t know.”
“Idiot,” she whispered without malice. “I’ll lead.” She bent forward and kissed him again, deeply. He wasn’t sure whose hands started working on his pants.
-
Afterward, Shinji lay on his back, staring at the ceiling. One arm was laid across his forehead, and the other stretched out above his head. Beside, him, Asuka lay sleeping, curled up in a loose ball, her back to him. The one blanket was draped lazily over them. For Shinji it covered from halfway up his calves, to just below his navel. With her curled up position, the blanket lay across Asuka’s chest and denied Shinji a view of her buttocks. Not that he was even looking.
A wide range of emotions flittered through the young boy during that night, but the one that stood out among all the others: he had a sinking feeling that he had just been used. After all, she had only come to him after Kaji had shaken her off, right? He wasn’t sure; reading people had never exactly been his strong suit. With that lovely thought, he rolled over onto his left side and let his arm flop off to the side, where is smacked against something plastic.
Somehow, they must have kicked his SDAT player into the room with them (it was Asuka’s room, he realized for the first time) and now it lay at his side, waiting. That alone made him suspicious. Very, very reluctantly, he set the earbuds in their place and depressed the Play button. Music. He cycled through the tracks; music played for each of them. When he shut it off and set it aside, a wide smile was plastered on his face.
It wasn’t a dream after all. At least he had that.
Sleep washed over him suddenly and he turned back over onto his right side. He found Asuka had turned over in his direction, which afforded him a lovely view of her breasts. But he wasn’t looking there; he was transfixed by her sleeping face. He didn’t think he’d ever seen her so peaceful. He wanted to reach out and stoke her face, but at the same time didn’t want to disturb her, so he let her sleep, and drifted off himself.
“…Sh-Shin…ji…”
He opened his eyes a tiny crack and saw her scoot closer to him. She said name again. “Shinji? You…asleep.” Her voice fell, but she continued. “I…thank you, I think…for being there…for being with me.”
Taking care not to disturb her, Shinji reached over and touched her cheek. Her eyes snapped open and her hand flew to his, and there it lingered. More words were exchanged in that moment than they had ever spoken to one another. He pulled her face to his and kissed her, feeling her lips part in anticipation. Their bodies mashed up against one another and rolled over. They went again; this time, Shinji was on top.
-
Misato awoke the next morning with a pounding headache, but otherwise intact. And hey, she even made it back to her apartment in one piece. She considered that a win. Crawling from beneath her blanket, she found herself still wearing the dress from the wedding. She sighed. Whatever. She shielded her eyes from the unforgiving sunlight and stumbled into the kitchen, only to find it empty.
That’s weird. Where’s Shinji? Did he oversleep? He’s usually cooking by now?
With similar stumbling, she found Shinji’s room and also found it empty. A wave of panic temporarily cleared her head, the kind of panic that a parent feels when a child is missing. She didn’t panic; he’d run away before and returned in one piece. But why would he run away this time? Even the panic failed to clear her head entirely and she was having trouble thinking straight.
That was when Pen Pen waddled up next to her and tugged at her dress.
“Hm? What is it, Pen Pen?” The hot springs penguin tugged again and pointed a flipper down the hall at Asuka’s room. “What? Asuka?” With the cryptic penguin-advice, Misato went to Asuka’s room. Having not connected the dots, she threw open the door and found the two of them together, curled up in a spooning position. Shinji’s arm was wrapped around Asuka’s waist and the two were sleeping peacefully. The blanket lay off the side, forgotten. Once her mind processed the information, Misato shut the door and backed into the kitchen. She found a piece of paper, a Shapie, and taped a note to the inside of the door.
We need to talk. – Misato.

the Jet Alone analogue arc/episode/story goes something like this:
going along with your (Ultra Sonic 007) idea, there is a secret device being developed that can perform Inception without having to send an entire team down three dream levels and possibly risk Limbofication. However, this device is being developed by the JSSDF. They know about NERV. the device is MANA, the Mechanized Autonomous Neural Actuator.
- Not sure if it's clear by this point in the story, but NERV is a top-secret organization, known only to the top levels of those in the world governments, and SEELE which exists above them all -
the JSSDF (or rather, a splinter faction) doesn't want Third Impact to go down, so they kidnap the pilots, Shinji and Rei, to put the idea in their heads to not go through with Third Impact. Unfortunately, the idea cannot take because of the way Childrens's minds work (which I'll discuss/cover later).
Now, the MANA has been guided by an artificial intelligence - lesser than the MAGI. When it cannot complete its job, it goes haywire and acts outside the constraints of its limitors. Using information it gleaned from the pilots minds, MANA manifests as an Angel inside (probably) Shinji's mind in order to complete the inception - because Angels basically do something similar.
The design of this Angel is the Seventh Angel from the beginning of the second Rebuild movie - I call it Muriel, the Angel of Emotions. Shinji and Rei proceed to defeat it.

"We are Gazadriel, the Angel of New Beginnings"
"We are the hesitation, Shinji. We are your fear."
"Even now you hesitate, the destiny of humanity in your hands. You wait. You fear. You know what you want, but fear to reach for it. We are that fear. Defeat us, and claim your future."
"NO! You must face us as you are. Do not hide behind a mask, do not arm yourself with the soul of another! Face us! Defeat us! Do it yourself, or else your wish is meanignless!"
"This responsibility was given to you. You and you alone!"
"We placed our trust in you, Shinji! Do not make us regret our faith in you."

Remember how I mentioned that the FINAL BATTLE with Gazadriel would be in Acheron, from 2.0/2.22? Well, I remembered them mentioning another section of Bethany Base called Cocytus. So I did some research.
Archeron and Cocytuc are both rivers from Greek mythology that flow into Hades, along with the Rivers Lethe, Styx, and Phlegethon. The names of the rivers Acheron, Cocytus, Lethe, Styx, and Phlegethon, respectively, translate to: Sorrow, Lamentation, Forgetfulness, Hate, and Fire.
Interesting. The name of the NERV base intrigued me as well. NERV-Bethany. Apparently, Bethany refers to two Biblical places: the birthplace of Mary (the one that anointed Jesus' feet), Martha, and Lazarus - also where Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. It also refers to a second location on the River Jordan above the Dead Sea, where John baptized Jesus.
Cool how NERV-Bethany is where we are introduced to Mari for the first time. A quick check proved there is indeed a section of Bethany Base called Styx, which makes me assume there are sections for Lethe and Phlegethon as well.
Anyway, this whole roundabout passage has been to illustrate how damn good I am at picking final battle sites - even when I don't know anything about them.
No, but seriously. Mary is from Bethany. It's one letter away from Mari. Lazarus was raised from the dead there - the Third Angel seemingly rose from the dead (containment) there. Asuka, it seems, might be held there in 3.0 and awaken - after being declared dead.
So anyway, setting the final battle of NPE in Bethany Base is just perfect, then.
P.S. Useless Judeo-Christian symbolism!
