Tentative Summary, tl;dr version
There are three dominant races in the world, Human, Salamanders (anthropomorphic lizards), and Faeries (more or less Elves). There are also the Birdfolk (actual name pending). Each of the main peoples (Humans, Salamanders, and Faeries) have their own home continent, although this doesn't matter that much in modern times, as airships and seaships allow for world travel - and the races don't really hate one another. The Birdfolk live all over the world in the mountainous areas. There was also another race and continent, but some time ago, a great cataclysm occurred that destroyed that race and their home. The area where that continent had been is now surrounded by an impassable maelstrom. However, shortly after the ruination, the Car'rion appeared throughout the world, a race of (possibly) undead people with various parts of their body invisible, but no less real. Nobody, not even they, know where the Car'rion came from or why.
All species can be mages, but the Birdfolk are a bunch of Proud Warrior Race Guys, and don't like to use it. Faeries are typically more proficient mages, Salamanders better fighters, and Humans better tacticians. Car'rion prefer magic to actual fighting.
Beyond the world is a dimension mortals can scarcely imagine. Living inside are a bunch of entities that mortals cannot comprehend. Only mages are immune to the maddening effects of these horrible things, which fits because large concentrations of magic can tear the barrier between these worlds and allow passage of the Eldricht Abominations into the world. A secretive organization exists with the sole purpose of exterminating groups who would (purposefully or not) being about the arrival of an entity.
My main guy is going around gathering mages to fight against said organization which he views as an enemy to all mages everywhere.
