♫So, welcome to the Mega-Mart!♫
The moment Lenore opened the doors to the store, she was assaulted by a cheery, upbeat tune coming from...somewhere. The first floor looked to go on for miles in any direction, but no matter how far she walked - forward, backward, left, right - the tune never grew any louder, nor any softer. She looked around, attempting to identify the source of the music, but it seemed to come from everywhere at once, relentlessly attacking her from all sides.
"Oh...Oh dear," she muttered. "I'm just going to...not dally too much in here. I'll make this
really quick."
Really quick. She said it to herself repeatedly, a sort of mental reassurance that things would be okay - a mantra to keep her grounded lest she become forever lost in the vast expanse of commerce. Her survey of the area revealed a peculiarity: the ceiling was made entirely of glass, giving her a clear view of the floor above. Did her eyes deceive her, or did the store seem to stretch infinitely upward with no end in sight?
Worriedly, Lenore rushed over to a far wall, upon which was mounted a color coded map of the building. No, mounted wasn't the right word. The map
was the wall, occupying an entire section of the building. It was large, to be sure, but it was simple enough to read. The place seemed to be logically parsed by function. Food, toiletries, sports, games, tools, appliances, jewelry. There were myriad sections listed on the map, each given a special, differentiating color.
It looked like a rainbow. And it was just the first floor.
Lenore felt a pit in her stomach. Doubt tugged at the corner of her mind. Would she be able to find what she was looking for?
Welcome to the Mega-Mart. The words echoed in her head, and only then did she realize the kind of situation she had gotten herself into.
She took a deep breath. "Relax, Lenore," she said. "It's just a store. You've just got to find the right section, go there, and buy what you need. Doesn't look like it'll be on this floor, so we'll just go to the next one."
Referring back to the map, she saw a star-shaped symbol. 'You are here', according to the legend. In that case, stairs to the next floor were just a few dozen yards to her left or right. A handful of steps and she'd be a bit closer to completing this part of her journey. Simple enough. She walked the appropriate distance to the left, found the staircase, and ascended to the next floor.
---
A few minutes of climbing later, Lenore found herself on the second floor.
Welcome to the Mega-Mart.The music hadn't gotten any louder, or any softer.
"All right, then. Floor number two. What have we got here?" Lenore thought aloud, scanning the floor as best she could, hoping to find the section she was looking for. The room seemed to go on for miles in every direction, and she wasn't able to get a sense of the entire place while looking from one spot. For a brief moment she thought to chance a random direction and see where it took her. She could get a much better feel for the store layout if she walked around for a little bit.
So she did.
A couple steps here, a couple steps there. A yard or two in one direction, a few meters in another. Lenore walked and walked and walked, but she never seemed to get anywhere. Or maybe she had already been everywhere and was just retracing her steps. If that had been the case, though, then surely she would have already found what she was looking for. She stopped and looked around again. Her gaze eventually fell upon the far wall.
"A map!" she said. "That's a much better idea than haphazardly walking about. Let's see..."
The map was massive, a behemoth of a diagram detailing the entirety of the floor, but it seemed easy enough to read. The building was laid out logically into different sectors. Food. Toiletries. Sports. Games. Tools. Appliances. Jewelry. The map depicted dozens of these sections, each one given a unique color to distinguish it from the rest.
It looked like a rainbow. And it was just the first floor.
No.
This was the second floor.
Lenore paused. "Hmm...I don't think I'm getting anywhere like this. It would be a lot easier if I had someone to assist in the search. Maybe I could summon Sylphie to help out. It's grunt work for a Wind elemental, but I don't think she'd mind too much." Lenore recalled the pixie's chipper attitude from when Valendis summoned her. Sylphie was good-natured and excited to help. She wouldn't mind at all.
Lenore closed her eyes. She had left her staff...somewhere, but the pixie was a Novice Tier elemental, easy enough to summon without it. The familiar cant rushed to her lips.
"
Incola Mundus Spiritus-"
Wait. What am I doing? she thought.
This is a Vaerian shopping center. If I start summoning here, who knows how much trouble I could get into? She shook her head, and the incantation left her mind. With a heavy sigh, she said, "I'll just...I'll just go to the next floor. What I'm looking for doesn't seem to be on this one, anyway..."
Looking back at the map, Lenore found her current location marked by a diamond symbol.
'You are here', the legend read.
She stepped back from the map. Hadn't that been a star-shaped symbol before?
"No, no...That was on the previous floor," she told herself. "But it doesn't matter. The map says the stairs should be behind me on both the left and right. Enough dawdling. Let's go."
---
A few minutes of climbing later, Lenore found herself on the fourth floor.
Welcome to the Mega-Mart.The music had neither gotten any louder nor any softer.
"So, what do we have on this floor?" Lenore peered around the room for a bit. The place seemed to extend for miles in every direction. There was no way she would be able to get her bearings like this. Perhaps if she walked around a little she'd be able to get a better feel for the layout of the building.
No. That's silly.
What she needed was a better vantage point, somewhere she could see the entire room at once.
"Yes, that would be a much better idea," she said. "It would be grunt work for someone of her caliber, but maybe I should summon Kazetama to help me search the place."
Or Iblis to burn it down."I don't...I don't know a summon called 'Iblis'...do I?" Lenore paused to consider where she might have heard the name before. She didn't recall learning about it in her childhood during training. Where, then? A book, perhaps? She
had been reading a lot from some of Valendis' old summoning tomes as of late, so she had probably just picked it up there.
"Yes," she assured herself. "Must've just gotten it from one of his books. But it doesn't matter. Kazetama would be a better option. She's a wind elemental, so she can fly and get an aerial view of the floor."
Lenore closed her eyes, and the summoning incantation came to the front of her mind.
"
Incola Mundus Spiritus, custodite mandata mea-"
Wait.
"Lenore, what are you doing?" she asked herself. "This is a
Vaerian shopping center. Are you asking to be captured? Just think of how much trouble you could get into if someone saw you! They probably already think you're weird for muttering to yourself like a raving lunatic. Maybe I should apologize and assure everyone that I'm not crazy. Yes, I'll do that."
So the summoner cleared her throat and announced, "Everyone, I am sorry for disturbing your shopping experience. I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me."
But no one was there.
"Wha...What's going on?"
Where had everyone gone to?
"They all must be upstairs," she said. "This is only the fifth floor, after all. And it is a big store."
Yes. That must be it. Everyone else must be upstairs. But had she seen anyone on the previous floors?
Lenore's heartbeat quickened and her breathing grew heavier. "The map...I just need to check the map," she said. "Then I can find the section that has what I'm looking for." She took an audible gulp, slowly mulling over the words she had just said. "What...What
am I looking for?" she asked.
Welcome to the Mega-Mart."I need to focus. I just need time to focus and think about what I'm doing. But it's so hard. Why won't it stop?" She shoved her fingers into her ears, desperate to drown out the music that hadn't stopped playing since she'd arrived.
But the tune didn't grow any softer or any louder.
"It's not here," she said.
What's not here?"I have to get to the next floor."
On the far wall, Lenore found a large map that seemed to cover the wall in its entirety.
"It's divided into sections," she noted. "Food, toiletries, sports, games, tools, appliances, jewelry. And each one has its own color, too. There are so many sections and so many colors, it's almost like a rainbow."
Or vomited crayons.A star-shaped symbol sat in the middle of the map - her current location, according to the legend. From there, she was able to determine where the steps were to reach the next level.
---
A few minutes of climbing later, Lenore found herself on the third floor.
...But had she really found herself?
"Or are your more lost than ever?"
A voice called out to her, teasing and playful. It was the only thing she could hear over the music.
Welcome to the Mega-Mart.It hadn't gotten any louder or any softer.
"Who...Who said that?! Show yourself!" Lenore demanded. She whipped around, readied the summoning chant, and reached for her staff. But it wasn't there. She had left it...somewhere. She half-expected to find a wall verbally taunting her, enticing her with a map and an assortment of colors. To her surprise, however, she found another girl, one who didn't seem to be that much older than she was. The girl was cute, dressed in a gray blazer and dark blue skirt. A long, light brown ponytail soared through the air as she moved, and it seemed almost as if it might fly away were it not for the white bow keeping it tied to her head.
"Oh." Lenore smiled, and then blushed, embarrassed by how she'd reacted. "It's just Monika."
Just Monika. Nothing to be so hung up about. Why did her presence seem so familiar?
The girl offered her own smile in return. "Just me!" she said. "I'm a clerk here at the store. You looked lost, so I thought I might be able to help you find what you were looking for."
That's right, Lenore thought.
I did come here looking for something. What was it?"Ah, yes, I was looking for-"
"Apparel," Monika finished. "You're not from Vaer, so you wanted a robe to help hide some of your more Arcian features, right?"
"Is...is that what I was searching for?" Lenore looked to Monika for reassurance. The clerk's emerald green eyes met her own and seemed to bore into her very soul. "How could you know?"
Monika nodded. "Of course that's what you were looking for. I know because we've been friends since we were children, silly."
That's right. The two had known each other since childhood. Lenore blushed again. How could she have forgotten so easily?
"Yes, a robe. A robe to hide my Arcian features," Lenore repeated. "Do you know where I could find one?"
The clerk smiled sweetly again and leaned in a little bit closer. "You're already in the apparel section, silly. It's right behind you."
"What?" Lenore turned around to see a circular clothing rack, a single black robe suspended there with a hanger. Monika was standing next to it.
"You're in luck!" she said. "Looks like this is our last one!" Never once breaking eye contact, Monika removed the robe from the rack. Lenore found herself instinctively raising her arms so that the store clerk could place the garment onto her body. "And it's a perfect fit, too. Isn't that great?"
"Yes. Very great," Lenore replied, nodding in agreement as she retrieved a small coin purse from her pocket. "How much do I owe you for this?"
"What? Ahahaha, don't be ridiculous." Monika shook her head emphatically, brushing Lenore's hand aside. "We've been friends since childhood, remember? I'm not going to charge you a thing! Just promise you'll come back and spend more time with me, okay?"
"Will that really be all right?"
"Of course! But if it will make you feel better, I can pretend to ring you up and give you a receipt! That way, it will at least look like you paid for it. There's a cash register on the next floor. Come on!"
Without thinking, Lenore grabbed Monika's hand. Squeezing tightly, she and the young store clerk made their way toward a set of stairs at the front of the room.
---
A few minutes of climbing later, Lenore found herself standing in between Marion and Vynalion, a robe around her shoulders and a staff strapped to her back.
"Welcome to the Mega-Mart," she said to Arrick's question.
But she didn't know why.
