General chess tips:
Try to control the center of the board. It's basic.
Don't get fooled by Scholar's Mate (4-move checkmate). Watch for it.
Don't pull a Fool's Mate either (look it up).
Don't try a Queen's Sacrifice unless you know what you're doing (which I doubt you do).
When your opponent makes a move, study the board and try to figure out what they're planning.

Know these terms: fork, pin, en passant caputre, discovered mate, ect. (if you use any kind of chess database than you'll run across more useful terms/strategies)
Know the difference between a strong and a weak opening move. In other words, DO NOT open with a rook's pawn.
Assume your opponent is trying to predict your moves and try to throw them off. That could mean anything, just try not to make it stupid.
Don't be afraid to make a gamble.
