*Author's note. I've changed the ending of Re4 for the sake of drama. Consider Re5 non-existent. Also, Leon has been out of work since 2005. Also, George Sears (solidus snake) was elected in 2004. The rest of the MGS timeline, for the most part, remains unaltered.
Chapter One: Arrival
Leon S. Kennedy had always hated the heat. He especially hated the heat when he happened to be in full gear.
"And to top it off, I'm in the fucking Middle East."
Leon wiped some sweat from his brow while trying to shield his eyes from the intense sunlight. Surrounding Leon were various men. Each had some sort of rudimentary military training. The System handled everything else. As the truck came upon an especially deep pot hole, Leon caught a glance at the man sitting diagonal-left from his position. For a second he mistook him for one of Ashely's old bodyguards. After focusing on him some more, he dismissed the thought.
He hated working for a PMC (Private Military Company), but with the economy this bad, what else could he do? The only thing he was ever good at was killing.
As Leon tried to catch some sleep, his thoughts returned to his last 'official mission'. Sure, he managed to save Ashely so technically it was a success, but Osmond Saddler got away. He never managed to live that down. "If only I had managed to get that shot..."
Ten since the missed sniper shot had only fermented his torment.
"That bastard is still out there. If only. If only."
Leon then took out his ID profile. His eye-piece showed him all his personal data. His age still stood out the most. 37.
"It really has been ten years. God, I'm getting too old for this shit."
The truck came to a rough halt as they approached the town. Leon didn't have to strain his ears to hear the sounds of death echoing throughout the city. Something caught his attention. What appeared to be metal boxes with legs were bounding about the horizon. With one final massive bound, they cleared the city walls and began to dispense their payloads of machine-gun fire.
"Damn, they've sent in Gekko's!"
Leon flipped the safety off his AK-103. This model wasn't registered in the System. His pistols weren't either. He carried a VP70 with a stock on his calf. He lovingly referred to it as Matilda. He also carried a C96 Mauser (Red9). Most of his fellow soldiers referred to him as the pistol man. Leon couldn't blame them. He simply loved the things, especially if they predated the System.
Leon charged into the city square, taking cover behind some rubble. The Gekko's were doing most of the work for him it seemed. However, he caught something amiss. He spotted someone who seemed to be wearing a hood and cloak. Leon couldn't help but conjure up memories of the zealots in that old castle.
"There's no way that he could possibly be here... Is there?"
Leon simply couldn't keep the thought back, no matter how hard he tried. 'This could be my chance!' he thought, 'I can finally give Osmond that bullet that I owe...'
Leon rushed to the nearest building, avoiding heavy fire as he went. He caught another eye full of the strange man. Leon continued to give chase for what seemed like ten minutes. Eventually some Gekko's took notice and began to chase the fellow as well. Eventually, the man was chased into a house and up some stairs; Leon in close pursuit. The Gekko's, however, pushed Leon out of the way and plodded their way up the stairs, destroying them in the process. Leon was then stuck having to climb the rubble, but he was in no hurry.
"Those Gekko's will turn that freak into mince-meat."
However, when he got to the top, he, along with the Gekko's, had found nothing. The Gekko's, having about the same IQ as a cow, simply dismissed the matter and went about their way. Leon however chose to take a breather. As he sat down, he noticed something rather strange. The pile of rubble beneath him felt too soft and squishy. Leon immediately jumped back. That was no sack of rubble, but a man in a stealth suit!
Leon took a close look at him, and seeing as how this guy was actually given some high tech stuff, figured that he must have been with the PMC. One thing that struck him as odd was the age of the man. He must have been at least 60 years old. Leon lowered his AK.
"Sorry about that, but have you seen a man in a hood and cloak?"
The man's rough voice responded with, "Yeah, you're looking at him."
With that, the man rushed at Leon with blinding speed, attempting to grab him. Leon retaliated with a swift punch to the man's kidneys. Leon then grabbed Matilda and swung it towards the stranger.
"Who's side are you on?!" Leon barked.
"Neither," the old man replied.
"So you must be a government agent," Leon said with a scoff, "How are they getting the money to pay you guys anymore?"
"I'm not getting paid," responded the old man.
Leon simply stared at him. 'Who is this guy?" he pondered. Before he could ask, the stranger asked a question of his own.
"Hey! You're that Leon Kennedy guy, aren't you? You saved the president's daughter a while back!"
Leon spat on the ground. "Okay, just who are you?"
"I'm David, but you may know me better as Solid Snake."
