Since I'm getting one for graduation, I think it's best that I do a little research. And I mean a LITTLE research.
What kind would you basement dwellers recommend?

well, depends on how much you wanna spend. If you want a god computer like Steven's, it will be around $1000
mine was around 600, its an HP.
I'd either go HP or Gateway.

WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN. I'M USING A DELL TO TYPE TO YOU ALL AS WE SPEAK...ERR...TYPE.
My trusty Dell Inspiron has been with me for over a year, and it's worked wonderfully. Minor problems (as with all computers) and it runs on VISTA DEAR LORD WHYYYYYYYYYYY but other than that it's good.
On that note, GET A MACBOOK. WASTE 3000 DOLLARS ON A TERRIBLE APPLE PRODUCT WITH TERRIBLE APPLE FEATURES. GOGOGOGOGOGO

If he were to get a Dell nowadays, it would probably run windows 7 (which is great by the way).

I'm using a Dell... desktop. I know nothing of laptops. But I promise you this. If it was made in the past 8 years it will be better than your desktop.

I hate Gateway with a passion. But if they have become reliable...go for it.
