According to Famitsu magazine, the number one magazine on Japanese game coverage in the world, Masahiro Sakurai, the freelance game developer renowned for his work on the Kirby and Super Smash Bros. series, has been making plans for a fourth Super Smash Bros. installment. The following is from an interview with Sakurai:
Sakurai says "at first I was skeptical about the idea, but the fans seem to be too eager for another one. If the time arises, I may have no choice but to work on it."
We asked him if he thought the challenge would be too difficult to undertake, especially after the critical acclaim Brawl received, to which he laughed and replied "Of course it would be difficult. But there is always room for improvement upon the original. The reason Brawl was such a success was because I had people from all different backgrounds share their ideas and feelings on how the game should turn out. If I got even more people, there is no doubt the game would end up even better than the previous one. I may even have to go back to HAL Laboratories."

I for one think this is pure awesome. Brawl was kind of a letdown for me and now it just sits on a shelf in the closet waiting to be played again. If he makes an SSB4 I really hope it's better than Brawl.
Here's the thread where I got the information from:

Sakurai also included a list of characters and their pictures he would like to see if he made another game. A lot of them are from Japanese games I've never heard of...We might be in for Super Weeaboo Bros. if we're not careful:
