I've been kicking around the idea of an alien invasion story. All that I've been able to settle upon are the following things:
- The bugs are highly advanced and have a limited hive mind. - The bugs are known for having special sub-species for certain jobs. Whether it be fixing space ships or clearing mines. - The Earth is suffering from a worldwide depression after the US' deficit finally caused a complete economic collapse. The EU and the US fragmented into several quarreling states. Other countries like China and Russia managed to hold out, but not without waging resource wars against each other. - Its set around 2030 - Humans haven't gone to Mars. - Yeah
Just tossing this out here.

Its hard to pinpoint where exactly the Second Great Depression took hold. Some texts say that it started with the late 2000's recessions. Others point out the more catastrophic US deficit implosion of 2014. Regardless of where it starts, the effects will linger for the rest of time.
The US' economy tanked, hard. Unemployment rates were as high as 42% in some states. Within a couple of months, states began to secede. Broken down into over 68 squabbling republics, the US soon became a distant memory.
The rest of the world fared no better. With its primary investor gone, China nearly collapsed. The only thing keeping them up was its quick conversion to massive military production.
The EU shattered by 2017. With states such as Germany, France, and the UK managing to isolate themselves, the rest of the Union slowly disintegrated.
Russia may have been the only state to have actually benefited from the disaster. Russia's military was always itching for a chance to show its power. In 2019, Russia invaded neighboring Alaska for its coal, iron ore, and petroleum. China in turn invaded many south-east Asian countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia.
With the former US in total disarray, one would think that one of the more progressive states such as New York or California would be first to reorganize. Ironically enough, Georgia was the first one to get its act together. After seceding from the Union, Georgia soon became a fundamentalist Christian, right winged state. However, after three months of totalitarian rule, a group of local insurgents overthrew it. The Republic of Georgia reorganized itself. Using massive public work initiatives, Georgia became the first state to have any semblance of regional power. Using its own success and wealth, it funded other insurrectionist groups all across the former United States. In 2022, the Republic of Georgia funded the EAU (East American Union): Composed of Georgia, New York, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Illinois, Virginia, the Unified Republic of Carolina, Alabama, Florida, and Louisiana. For the next ten years, the EAU experienced something related to that of peace.
Life under these new states, however, was not easy. The Republic of Georgia was debatably just as totalitarian as the regime it replaced. Private enterprise was kept down by the new government due to the common belief that massive corporations were the cause of the crash in the first place. Regardless, While people within the EAU were content with its government, every other state held resentment towards them.
Of course, all this became null and void after First Contact.
The Bugs came out of nowhere. One day, the skies were clear, the next they were full of massive black dots orbiting the Earth. Africa was the first to get hit. Followed by South America. Brazil managed to hold itself together, but its rain-forests proved to be quite a hassle with millions of Bugs making colonies within it.
Asia came next, but Russia and China were more than ready to meet the task. While the majority of the Middle East fell, the rest of Asian managed to hold the things off.
Europe was a mixed bag. Germany, France, and the UK held firm, the other nations were quick to fall.
Finally, there is the American front. This is were we must choose the destiny of our fallen nation. Its 2034 and someone just called the exterminator.

I'm liking the idea so far, but now we'd have to figure out how to make it into an interactive story. So far it seems like it would be just running around and killing bugs in the style of a zombie apocalypse type tale.

I think that it might work if we each control our own republic. As we all act as leaders of the disunited states... DIBS ON GEORGIA!
