(I know I have a lot of little stories going on at once, but I actually thought up a whole story for this one.)
The train station was filled with people bustling about. Music could be heard from the randum guitars or small bands busting here and there. Colorful signs were posted everywhere. A smalltown girl like Linette would be seen as invisible. She made her way through the crowd, saying 'excuse me' as she slid through. She tried her best to remain curtious as she accidentally stepped on people's feet or bumped into them. She was very clumsy.
The others, however, were not as polite. They shoved her around as if she weren't there. She felt the silk, floral patterned scarf around her neck get pulled several times. She pulled the light tan trench coat she wore tighter to her, concealing a light pink dress. Her white flats clacked along on the tiled floor.
She finally burst out of the crowd to the ticket booth, which surprisingly happened to be empty at the time. She took short, quick breaths as she clenched her hands around the edge of the counter. She managed to talk to the lady in the booth inbetween breaths. "What....can I get....with.....fifty dollars...?"
The lady looked at her questioningly, but quickly looked on her computer for the girl's request. "We're having a sale today. We've got some empty seats on the midnight train to Chicago. You want a ticket?"
The girl smiled and coughed a bit. "Yes....I'll take it."
The lady handed over the tickets and Linette stuffed them into her purse. She turned around reluctantly to enter the crowd again. She made her way through the hurried crowd to find the midnight train to Chicago.

The normal moving crowd was suddenly jerked in certain places. A clear line was forming as a young boy ran through the crowd, pushing anyone who stood in his way. His black trench coat flew out behind him and he held on tight to his fedora. The feather fluttered to and fro.
"MOVE OUT OF THE WAY!" He ran to the ticket booth and spoke quickly as if he was in a hurry. "Give me anything. I'll go anywhere."
He tossed some money over the counter as the lady hurriedly grabbed the first ticket she saw and handed it to him. He didn't even glance at it as he shoved it into his pocket. He quickly turned back to the crowd, who had learned to get out of his way by now, but paused when he heard shouts not far behind him.
"Mallory!" Tall men in shades and black hats could be seen making their way through the croud.
The boy quickly ducked through the crowd and boarded the first train he saw. It was chock full of people. He quickly scanned the seats and saw an empty one in the middle of the aisle. He sat down in it immediately, not bothering to ask the person next to him if it was taken. He looked behind him from his seat but quickly turned back around. The men had boarded the train.
He shrunk into his seat and positioned his hat to sheild his face. He paid no attention to the stares he got from the girl next to him. She opened her mouth to say something, but he quickly placed a finger over her lips, signaling her to be quiet. She gave a mixed look of surprise and apall, but she just turned away from him and looked out the window. The men began to walk down the aisle and look at the seats when one of the train's attendants approached them.
"I'm afraid that we're all full, sir." He blocked them from continueing down the aisle.
The man paid no attention to him and tried to push past him. "I'm not ridin'. I'm just lookin' for someone."
The attendant held his ground and tried to keep him from passing. "Do you have a ticket, sir?"
"No, just let me through."
"I'm sorry, sir, but no ticket, no train."
The tall man looked irritated and stepped towards the attendant, but the man behind him placed a hand on his shoulder and gestured that they should leave. They quickly exited and the attendant bursted with pride, thinking himself a hero.
The boy let out a long sigh of relief and sat back up in his seat, readjusting his fedora. "Thanks for keeping quiet."
She ignored him and continued to look out the window. He chuckled at her silent treatment and folded his arms. He was glad to finally be rid of those men.

The train slowly began to make it's move from the station. The bustling crowd was soon out of site and replaced with the view of Denver. It was only fall and small flurries of snow had begun to fall. He hoped it would be warmer where he was going.
His thoughts were interupted as an attendant came through the door from the car infront of them asking for tickets. He slowly made his way to where he was sitting. "Tickets please."
He pulled out his ticket and handed it to the attendant to have it punched. The girl next to him did the same. The attendant handed the tickets back and went on to the next customer. The boy examined his ticket for the first time and swore under his breath. Chicago was the place he was trying to get away from...and it would definitely be colder there.
The girl next to him finally turned to him, seeming to not mind being hushed earlier. She had a puzzled look on her face. "Is something wrong?"
He glanced at her then turned away, but paused. He looked at her again, quickly looking her over. She had honey colored hair with bits of cinimon and mint green eyes. Her cheeks were a soft pink and her lips shined with the gloss that she had obviously put on not too long ago. "Nah, I just need to catch another train when I get there. Nothing to worry about."
The girl frowned. She had been hoping for a conversation. She didn't want to sit in silence for the next twenty-two hours. She searched her mind for something to talk about. "What's your name?" A bright smile filled her face.
"Ben Mallory....your's?"
"Linette Lennea." He turned away from her again. She sat back in her seat and sighed. She had nothing to do and barely had any money. All she had with her was a few bills, her i.d. and license, and some lip gloss. Not enough to live off of.
"So why are you on this train." Benjamin had suddenly turned back to her.
"I'm....going out on my own." She didn't want to tell any details.
Benjamin chuckled. "So you're finally gonna go out into the world all on your own? How old are you?"
"21"
"Same here."
"So.....why are you on this train?" She suddenly became very curious about him.
"Me? I don't know. I just got on."
"You don't know what you're doing?"
"Do you?"
Linette opened her mouth to speak, but quickly shut it. He had a point there. She didn't know what she was doing on this train, but she was and might as well deal with it.

Most if the train ride was spent in silence. Linette had told Benjamin that she was from Deora, Colorado and he had told her that he was just looking to get away. Neither said much after that. When the train finally came to a stop the people all got up at once to collect their belongings and file off the train. Linette and Benjamin were the last to leave the train. They stood outside of its door after getting off the train.
Linettte was the first to speak. "Well, Benjamin,....I guess this is where we leave."
"Yeah..."
Both just stood there, looking at the hoards of people they would have to go through. Neither wanted to move and neither did. Benjamin looked at Linette. She was staring down at her feet with a hopeless look to her face. She seemed scared and alone. "You don't have anywhere to go, do you?"
She glanced at him and shook her head. Benjamin smiled at her and offered his hand. "Neither do I."
Linette looked at his outstretched hand. It seemed so welcoming but also terrifying. She had only met him today and he wanted her to come with him. Excepting it would probably be the worst thing she could do. She didn't know what kind of a man he was. She glanced around her, seeing nothing but people, and took his hand. He smiled and then jerked her suddenly. Before she knew it, she was running through the crowds of people.
'What have I gotten myself into?'

The bar was filled with people. Smoke had filled the air causing Waite to cough after every song. He tried to breath through his mouth to block out the smell of wine and cheap perfume. He looked over the crowd as the band behind him prepared for the next song. Their gigs seemed to get worse every night, but he wouldn't stop believing that they could make it someday. Even if they hadn't written any of their own songs yet, 3Alarm Strumbar would make it someday.
Waite cleared his throat as the band signaled that they were ready. He began to sing Under Pressure by Queen (I put my music on shuffle and this was what I got). He listened to the bass' rythemic notes as he waited for his cue. He began to sing as two people walked into the bar, but he couldn't tell who they were because the smoke had blurred his vision.
He ignored them and continiued to sing. The crowd didn't seem to acknowledge that he was there, but he didn't care. He made sure to stick the long high note good and loud so that they would have to pay attention to him.

Benjamin and Linette entered the bar. It was full of smoke and people. A band was playing on the stage as they made their way to a small table. They sat in a corner away from the other people. Benjamin looked at Linette's uncomfertable expression and chuckled. "Haven't you ever been in a bar before?"
Linette just shook her head and listened to the band.
"Wait, you're twenty-one and you've never gone out drinking?"
"I come from a small town. We don't go out drinking very often."
"Well, then....I guess we're going to have to make this special."
Benjamin called to a waitor to order two beers. Benjamin turned back to the table to look at Linette. She looked uncertain of what would happen next. "So....why are you really here?"
Linette looked at him, surprised. "I told you. I'm going off on my own."
"With no money or idea of where you're going?"
Linette looked down at her hands, fiddling with them. "I....I didn't like Deora. I wanted to get away."
"So the smalltown girl got lonely?" He smiled to himself a little. Linette had caught it and scowled.
"Why don't you tell me why those men were after you?"
Benjamin's smile turned into a frown and he sat back in his seat. "That's not important."
The waitor brought the two beers and the two drank them in silence. Linette made a sour face when she took the first sip, but tried to hide it. Benjamin could easily see behind her fake expression and laughed. "You don't have to drink it if you don't want to. It's kind of a crappy beer anyways."
"Thank you." She placed it back on the table as the singer began a new song. He started singing Killer Queen. Linette looked nervously around the bar at the people. Some were huge with tattoos all over them while others looked sly and sneaky. It wasn't the kind of place she wanted to be in, but she didn't really know where to go.
"So what's it like livin' in a small town." Ben had set his drink aside and leaned on the table.
"It's nice, but there's no excitement. Everything is the same everyday. Where are you from?"
"South Detroit. I moved to Chicago a few years ago then left, and now I guess I'm back."
Ben eyed the people in the bar. One man was eyeing them. He was tall and bald with dark sunglasses. He wore a dark trench coat and dark jeans. Linette had spoken, but he didn't hear it. He was fixated on the man who had turned away from them.
"Ben....BEN!" Linette was getting frustrated and annoyed.
"What?"
"I said where do you live? Is there an inn or something nearby?"
"If you have no money, they won't take you."
"I have money!" Linette held her purse tight to her. It looked empty when she held it that way.
"Really? How much?" Ben had a sarcastic look on his face.
Linette just looked down, her answer unspoken. Ben sighed and then rose out of his seat. "You can stay at my place if you'd like."
Linette looked up at him, horrified. Ben burst out laughing as Linette's face turned red. "I don't mean anything like that. I have some extra space." He helped Linette out of her seat.
She seemed willing enough, so he turned to go out. "If I was planning on doing that I would have gotten you drunk first."
Linette froze, her eyes opened wide. 'He's kidding right? He's just gonna joke about it any time now.'
Benjamin just looked back at her from the entrance. "You commin' or not?"
Linette shook her head and followed him out the door. They began to walking down the street together towards his apartment. They took no notice to the man that had gotten out after them. It was the man that had been watching them from before.

They had been walking for a few minutes when Linette heard footsteps behind her. She glanced behind her, but saw nothing. It was too dark to see. She strained her eyes to try and see through the darkness. She jumped when she saw a shadow move behind her. She stepped closer to Ben. He was tense too, but it wasn't because of the man behind them. There were shadows waiting up ahead near the streetlight down the boulevard.
Ben picked up his speed a little bit, but he showed no change in emotion. The men stepped in his way when he tried to pass them. "Goin' somewhere?"
Ben didn't look at them. He just pulled Linette behind him for protection. "Yes. If you could please step aside...?"
The two men stepped into the light from the street light above them. They were dressed the same way as the bald man, but they had hair and wore black hats. They had malicious smiles on their faces. "We've been searchin' for you. Why don't you come with us?"
Ben sighed and looked up at them with a blank expression. "No."
The bald man came up behind them and the other men nodded. "Do you really need to act this way? We just need the money you owe us. Hand it over, and we'll be gone."
Ben's voice scratched as he held his composure. "You'll get your money, just get out of my way, damnit."
The bald man behind them stepped closer. "You could always give us something else for the money." He placed a firm hand on Linette's shoulder.
Ben quickly swiped the man's hand away away and held his arms out infront of Linette. "Don't you dare touch her!"
Linette cowered behind Ben as she burried her face in his shoulder. She had gotten herself into one hell of a mess, and now the only person who could help her was someone she had just met. The bald man smirked and stared at her. "Ding ding, I think we have a winner."
Ben's eyes filled with fire as he filled with anger. "You're not taking her! I don't have the money, ok?!"
The man who hadn't spoken suddenly grabbed Ben by the collar and swung him into the wall of the building they were next to. "Ok, no more fooling around! Where's the money, kid?!"
Ben grabbed at his collar, trying to pry the man's hands off his shirt. He stressed to speak in between breaths. "I DON'T HAVE YOUR GOD DAMN MONEY! LET ME GO!"
He kicked at the man, but they had no effect. The man was much larger than he was. The baldy smirked and stepped towards Linette, who had been left unprotected in the middle of the sidewalk. "We'll be takin' this then."
He grabbed ahold of Linette's arm as she screamed and tried to pull away. "NO! LET ME GO!"
Ben thrashed out, but couldn't break the man's grip around his neck. "NO! LET HER GO! SHE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS! I'VE ONLY JUST MET HER!"
The man standing behind the tall man, who seemed to be their leader, chuckled and gestured for the bald man to give him Linette. He grasped her arm and jerked her to him. He bent down to hold her chin and point her terrified face at Ben. "Well, we'll make her our own business. Don't you think she'll be a marvolous addition to our little club?"
Linette looked at Ben as tears began to flow from her eyes. She tried to blink them away, but they wouldn't stop. Ben stopped thrashing to look at her apologetically. "I'm sorry...that I got you into this..."
The leader grabbed onto both of her shoulders to hold her still. "Since you're overdue on your payent, then we have no use of you." He looked at the tall man, "Get rid of him."
Linette screamed out in shock as the tall man threw Ben to the ground and pulled out a gun from his pocket. Before Ben could get up a gun was pinned against his forhead. Linette began to cry loudly and tried to pull away from the leader, but he held her still. The leader looked down at him and smiled evily. "Goodbye, Benjamin. Say hello to your parents for me."
BANG!

Linette screamed as the gunshot fired. Blood splattered on Benjamin's forhead as his eyes widened and he lost his breath. Linette closed her eyes as tears streamed down her cheeks, but the man holding her forced her to look. She opened her eyes again to look at Benjamin, but he was still sitting up. He was staring at the bald man in front of him. She glanced up to him and gasped.
The side of his head was oozing with blood, his ear blown to peaces. The blood on Benjamin's forhead must have been the splatter from the bald man's wound. He toppled over and hit Benjamin's side. He struggled to get out from under him and stand up. His knees were shaking but he managed to stand up straight.
The man holding Linette thrust her behind him and reached for his waist. "Damnit, Samson. Guess I'll do this myself!"
He pulled out a gun and aimed it at Ben's chest. Another shot fired, but Ben was still standing. The streetlight had been shot out leaving all of them to stand in darkness. Linette strained her eyes, but couldn't tell where the shots were coming from. She saw the man infront of her start to move. He was waving his arms about to try and find his way. Linette stepped around him to try to get away, but let out a cry when she felt someone grab her arm. A mouth was placed over her mouth to muffle her cry as she was quickly jerked out of the grasp of the leader.
Ben shushed her in her ear, and Linette calmed down. It was Ben who had grabbed her. He had moved out of the way of the gun's aim. Another shot fired and Linette screamed again, but she didn't have to worry about the men. They turned to run as soon as it had fired. The leader shouted towards them in the darkness. "Don't think this is over! We'll have your head on a plaque the next time we see you!"
Linett looked around her. Trying to see the buildings around her. She spotted movement on top of one of them and strained to see it. A figure of a man could be seen as he ran away, hopping from building to building as he fled. His emotionless eyes had shone in the night before he ran. Linette sighed in relief.
Someone was looking out for them, hiding somewhere in the night.

Ben grabbed Linette's hand and sprinted down the sidewalk, jerking her with him. It was pitch black outside since the streetlight had gone out, but Ben seemed to know his way. They ran on, Ben pulling Linette around corners and across streets, until they came to a small apartment building. Linette was silent as he lead her up the steps and into the building.
She was surprised to see how open the inside was. The stairs spiraled against the walls and left the hall open with old, worn tile on the floor. Ben was silent as he pulled her up the steps and walked quickly, but silently to his room. But his silence didn't protect him from the old woman in her robe and curlers. Linette jumped as she yelled at him. "Benjamin Mallory! It's been ages since you've been here! Do you know how much you owe me? You were gone for three months! And who's this girl here? I will not stand for any more rucuss coming from that room. You'll wake the other paying customers, and--"
"Please, Ms. Biddy. I'l have the money, but it's late and my friend needs a place to rest. I won't be any trouble, I promise."
Linette watched the old woman's anger shrink as she listened. Ben had somehow managed to put on a kind face and polite tone, and Ms. Biddy couldn't say no. She turned back to her appartment, letting him off with a warning like she had countless times before, but she suddenly spun around with a shocked expression. "Is that blood?!"
"Good night, Ms. Biddy."
Ben shut the door on her and sunk in his couch, his hands covering his face as he sighed. The appartment was small and plain with only one bedroom through the side door, but it seemed comfertable enough. Linette had remained at the door unsure of what to do. Could she really stay after what just happened? She had nowhere else to go, but she wouldn't stay without answers. She walked over to Ben and fiddled with her hands nervously. "Ben?"
He didn't look up. He just sat there, haunched over with his elbows on his knees. Linette was starting to worry, but she wouldn't let him get away. She tapped him on the shoulder and tried again. "Ben?"
She gasped as he grabbed her wrist and pulled her next to him. She fell over slightly onto his side and had trouble straightening herself. Ben remained silent and unmoving, and Linette sat quietly by his side and thought to herself. She had really gotten herself into a mess, and now she didn't know what to do. 'What am I doing here? I should go straight back to the train station and head home. Maybe that's what I'll do.'
She started to get up, but Ben grabbed her arm to stop her. "Wait. Stay."
She froze and stared at him. He had let his hands fall from his face and he looked up at her with a small, strained smile. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have let that happen."
Linette pulled her hand away and stepped backwards to the door. "I'm sorry, but I really should go home. I don't belong here. I don't belong here at all."
She turned quickly to the door and opened it to go out, but Ben was faster. He jumped up from the couch and grabbed her waist. "Wait!"
Linette froze at the door and stared at his hands. He took them off of her waist and shook his head. "Sorry, I'm just....Please stay?"
Linette turned to look at him, surprised to see the change in his actions so quickly. He seemed to want nothing to do with her on the train, but now...she didn't understand it. Maybe he was lonely like her. She shut the door quietly and fiddled with her hands. "You're hurt?"
He shook his head, but Linette lead him to the sink. She spotted a cloth, and she wetted it to wipe the slattered blood off of his cheek. She didn't look at him as she gently wiped the blood away. "Now will you tell me who those men were?"

Ben stood silently, unmoving. He didn't understand what he was doing. Why was he opening himself up to someone he had just met. He didn't even act like this around his friends. All he knew was that he didn't want her to go. "Ok. I'll tell you everything."
He led her to the couch and sat down, taking a deep breath before speaking. She waited patiently as he readied himself. "They're from the underground area. They call themselves Pheonix (lol wut?) because they used to be nothing, but now they're on top. They're basically a mafia. They killed my parents when I was younger, and told me I had to do everything they said.
"I was a heavy gambler, and I would usually play with the lower men who did small jobs, but one day I played against the higher ones. They weren't the leaders, but they were pretty close. I was winning a lot of money, pretty much all they had, and I felt confident. It got to a point where I had a pretty good hand. I knew I was going to win, and I wanted to take a risk. I bet it all."
Linette leaned closer, enchanted by the story. "And then?"
"I lost. I bet more than I had, and now they want their money. They've let me off the hook for a while, but now they need it. I don't know what to do."
Ben looked up to see Linette's expression, expecting it to be bad, but he was surprised when he saw that it was calm. "You're not telling me the whole story, are you?"
"No." He wasn't going to lie, but he wasn't going to tell her the full truth either.
"So was that all just......nothing."
"No, it's partially true. I do owe them a lot of money, and part of it is from gambling, but.....I can't tell you the rest."
"Huh.." She looked away for a bit, her mind wondering, but she suddenly turned back to him. "I guess I should tell you a bit about myself, huh?"
Ben laughed after seeing her carefree expression. She acted like a highschool girl trading secrets at a slumber party. "Yeah, I guess."
"I think I should change first. Do you have something I can borrow?"
Ben looked surprised and sat up. "What?"
Linette laughed and stood up from the couch. "Just a t-shirt and some pants would be fine."
Ben went into his room and quickly rumaged through his drawers. He pulled out and old t-shirt from years ago, and a pair of sweatpants. He handed them to her and she changed in the bathroom. He felt awkward sitting on the couch waiting for her.
"Ok, I'll tell you now!"
She jumped onto the couch and giggled. Ben raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms. He didn't understand her at all. It was like she was bipolar. "So....?"
"I lived in Deora, Colorado, got bored, and moved here. The end."
She had a wide smile across her face as she sat up. Ben scoffed. "That's it?"
"You didn't tell me the whole story, either."
"Yeah, but I at least gave more details than that."
"Do you mind if I get a drink?"
Ben was getting a little annoyed. She was trying to be evasive by changing the subject. "Sure. Cups are in the top cubboard."
She walked over to the small kitchen across from them and stood on her tip toes to reach for a glass. Her t-shirt was short, and it showed the lower part of her back. There was a small butterfly on her left hip. Ben sat up and laughed. "So the small town girl has a tattoo?"
Linette gasped and turned around, hiding her tattoo. Her face was a bright red. "Yeah.....I guess you'll be wanting an explanation."
"It would add some excitement to your story."
"Alright, but it's a long one."
"I have time."

Linette walked back over to the couch as she carefully covered her back. She plopped down and folded her legs indian style. Ben leaned back and crossed his arms, a smirk on his face. Linette scowled when she noticed, but Ben still kept the same expression/ "Well? Go on."
Linette took in a deep breath. "Where do I start?"
"How about at the begining?"
"Well it all started with a big bang--"
Ben lept forward and covered her mouth. "Don't joke around. Tell me."
Linette grabbed his hand and threw it off of her. "Fine! I used to live in Deora, Colorado, where I was just a normal girl with an average life. There was nothing special there, just suburbs and a few places for outings. I would wake up early in the morning, go to school, come home, and go to bed. It was the same everday. The same boring thing. The thing was, I didn't realize what was happening to me. I was becoming like everyone else with no life ahead of me. I wanted excitement, but I didn't know how to get any.
"Then he came. I guess that's how it all started. With him...."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Linette struggled to balance herself with the tall stack of books in her arms. She could barely see over them, and she had to feel her way around with her feet when she walked down steps. Her curly, honey-colored hair was tied back into a pony tail with a ribbon to keep it out of her face so she could better her vision for the short trip home from the library. She was used to all this by now, though. She went to the library every weekend. It wasn't often that it got a new shipment of books, so she often read her favorites multiple times.
She slowly made her way through the park on her way home. She smiled a greeting at the familiar people she saw on her way. They were the usual neighbors that were there everyday at the same time doing what they always do. She stopped as a dog ran in front of her to catch a frisbee. It nearly knocked her over as it ran past, but Linette regained her balance. She paused to make sure there was no one else in the way before she began her walk again.
She noticed a young boy leaning against a tall oak to the right of her. It was by the basball field right outside the fence. He had thick, black hair that hung over his blue eyes. He was wearing a loose black t-shirt and black jeans with a black leather jacket. His bright red convers popped compared to the darkness of his apparal. He leaned casually with his hands in his pockets and his head leaned lazily against the bark of the tree. One leg was propped up so that his foot was against the tree. His head was tilted slightly in her direction, and she noticed that he was staring at her.
Linette gazed at him for a moment. She had never seen him before, and she hadn't heard of new people moving in. The last person to move in came over thirty years ago. She stared at him, until she realized he wasn't looking at her eyes. She didn't know what he was looking at, but she swiftly turned her head away. "Hmph." He was probably just some pervert. I don't care if he's new.
She began walking quickly to the tall steps that lead out of the park and onto the sidewalk near the neighborhood. She kept her face forward and didn't look back. She could still feel his gaze on her. Hmph. Who does he think he is? He can't just stare at me like that, the pervert. I'm not an item. Does he think he can win me over by staring at me?
As she approached the steps, she was blinded by a bright light. She held up a hand to shield her eyes, but she realized that she had let go of her books and became unbalanced. Her books poured out of her hands, dragging her with them as they began to fall down the stairs. Linette screamed when she saw saw the concrete coming close to her. She shut her eyes tightly and covered her face with her arms in a flash. She heard the thud as her books fell down the steps, but she didn't hear her own fall. She didn't even feel it. She did, however, feel something around her arms.
She peeked through one eye and saw the concrete steps below her. She was hanging from the top step still. How.....?
She saw hands grasping her arms, holding her up. Someone must have caught her before she could fall, but she didn't see anyone close enough to catch her intime except............
"Are you okay?"
