If you steal from something old, it's called an homage.

So... Any ideas for chapter 2?

not quite, but I think we should change it to be set in 1915. Still 15 years after Second Impact, but the shifting of the story by 100 years makes a bit more sense than making it 1882. It requires a little less historical finangling and makes the Anglo-German war make more sense, as it occurs no during WWI on our timeline.
We're only two chapters in, so the change wouldn't be all that drastic, and cameras and vehicles would fit more snuggly into the continuity. It would end up being more retro-futurist than anything, but I think it would make more sense.
War of the Worlds is set in the early twentieth century, so this is just...adhering to establish canon.

I think it's fine the way it is. Changing the era wouldn't make it steam-punk anymore.

Remember that this is major alternative history with a super-powerful German state and massive, cloned, fighting machines.
If anyone has a problem with that, then just write it off as AU's are AU's for a reason.

Ok. So chapter 2 needs to have the following things
- Introduction to Rachel - Lord Gendo having a nice father-son chat with Shaun - Shaun's new school/ Classmates - Delving into Anglo-German relations - And perhaps Shamshel if we have the time.

the intro to Rachel would inherently warrant an explanation of Anglo-German relations, if only very basic. You're right though. Shamshel can be hinted at in the end, as a dark shadow, or something.
