While I work the kinks out of The Stars Alight, I have another, more restricted idea.
It's basically this: Earth. Near-mid future. On one planet (not earth) an alien ark ship appears. The survivors on the ark ship seek refuge on the human planet. (think District 9).
Eventuallty some other aliens show up searching for something the first aliens had, and are convinced it's hidden on the planet, and begins scouring it.
there's more, but that's the gist.
I was drawing on District 9, Halo: Reach, and StarCraft for this.
What do you think?

Not earth. Eventually it will reach earth, but it start somewhere else.
And by scour I mean burning the freaking planet to the ground.

How about some sort of alien race that is trying to ascend to the next level of existence but just isn't there yet?
Like they're ultra-powerful and discovered the traces of some progenitor race that ascended and are now trying to do the same to themselves, but just can't find the last piece to the puzzle.
That's the relic they're looking for. The last piece.

Perhaps.
I'll keep that in mind, but I can't guarantee I'll use it. But remember, the first species arrived here on an ark ship. That means it's been traveling for hundreds of years at a minimum.

I was originally going along the lines of the first race having stole/found something (I still can't decide what it is - a weapon is a nice default) and sent it away on an ark ship to keep it way from the second race.
- the first race is the Erste, and the second is the Zweite
Or the Zweite is exterminating the Erste, and they escaped.
