[skip to the line if you just want to get to the review]
End of Evangelion drew a number of reactions from us all, ranging from passively disappointed to murderous rage. One thing I believe we can all agree on though is this: the ending movie brought no real closure to the series.
This may be genius on Anno's part. Due to the lack of a true ending, he's been able to expand his story into a near infinite amount of else-world adaptations. And due to the ravenous hunger of the fans, we eat it up. We hope for some true ending stashed away in one of these games or mangas. And although we may finally be getting one from the recent "Rebuild" movies, one fan work seems to have finally given the series a satisfying end.
I discovered it during a conversation on the tvtropes forums. And I have gone back and personally thanked the people who brought it up.
Without further adieu, here is my review of Evangelion: RE-TAKE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The scenario presented in RE-TAKE has been done a million times. However, unlike previous fanworks, this doesn't feel forced. Shinji wakes up in a hospital bed after receiving a horrible nightmare. He glimpses a dying world. A world were everyone he knows dies due to his own cowardice. After waking up, he finds himself unable to be around Rei. "I cannot look at her anymore." Images of a split face looming from the horizon dominate the panel.
As Shinji goes about the rest of the day, he gets an overwhelming sense of deja vu, culminating in Toji being selected as the Fourth Child. Here Shinji realizes that he received not a nightmare, not a bad dream, but a glimpse of the future! He vows not to let any of it transpire.
During testing, his sync rates skyrocket. However, he knows that should he let them get too high, Asuka will not be happy. So he keeps them just below were her readings should be.
Shinji finds himself unable to bear Asuka receiving pain. He wishes only to protect her, knowing the cruel fate that he damned her to in his vision. However, after an angel attacks, Asuka finds out about Shinji's ploy and demands to know the cause of it. Shinji responds with a reluctant, "I don't know."
Due to Shinji's unwillingness to be around Rei, he spends more time hanging out with Asuka. Rei feels rejected. Vowing to get her friend back, she mimics Asuka in every way she can. Shinji, being incredibly unnerved at this, demands that Rei stops, explaining that only Asuka can be Asuka and he will not allow anyone else to try to be like her.
"I love her."
Asuka overhears this and encounters Shinji in their house. Once there, they both make a decision that will change the course of time. Ultimately reversing their roles as SEELE's twisted game barrels towards them.
The manga, doujinshi (for all us super-nerds out there, please turn off your alarm) to be exact, is wonderfully crafted. The artist and writer are both very talented and manage to capture the feel of the original series perfectly. I found it be a perfect extension to the series, to the point that, as far as I'm concerned, it's cannon. That's right, I consider this amateur fanwork to be cannon. That should say a lot right?
However, there are two things that I need to warn you guys about:
1) Soul punching. This work just loves to have everything be alright and then promptly reveal it to be non-existent, or short lived. However, I think that it speaks a great deal about something where a simple plot twist leaves you on the verge of a breakdown. Seriously, powerful emotional responses abound here people.
2) PWP type 2. Nuff' said.
Regardless, I cannot recommend this thing highly enough. The ending is simplistic, but effective. Leaving you (GASP) satisfied.
There is an "All Ages" version of this thing, but I personally believe that it loses something without one certain scene.
NOTE: DO NOT READ 00 UNTIL AFTER YOU READ 3. IT'S SORT OF A PREQUEL/ASIDE/ALTERNATE TELLING/RECAP. REGARDLESS, IT'S POWERFUL.
