An Evil Empire sets out to conquer the world, burning towns, summoning demons, and generally being douche-bags. Everyone is pissed and scared shitless. Then a group of heroes arrive to strike down the Empire and free the people. They raise an army and challenge the Imperial Army...and they loose. the rebellion is destroyed but the heroes escape with their lives.
1. Wouldn't that game suck ass?
2. What do the heroes do after that, since they lead thousands to their deaths for nothing?

Sounds like SPARTA VS. PERSIA, and as we all know, 300 did well. Plus, it would be realistic, and EVERYONE LOVES REALISTIC GAMES

the game would be more interesting if you began AFTER the rebellion was crushed, starting as a defeated and shunned hero.

Okay, maybe I shouldn't have mentioned video games because my point WAS: what do the heroes do? Do they continue fighting or do they simply give up and fade back into society?

That depends on one thing: HOPE! If the hero feels hopeful, they'll keep trying. If not, they just give up.

They led an army of tens of thousands of civilians to their deaths and accomplished nothing.

Maybe they feel like they need to avenge the lives they lost.

If anyone cares, I thought this up while listening to "Kings and Queens" on the car ride up, so...yeah

It really all depends on the personality of the hero. Is this hero Zapp Brannigan? Because he leads thousands of people to their deaths on a daily basis.

Ok never mind. This was a stupid topic. I'm going to go now and ignore everything I've just heard (except maybe Adam). Expect to see some prose concerning this topic the uncertain future.

Not really. Sorry Nicole and Austin, but you didn't actually say anything.

NICOLE BROUGHT UP HOPE, WHICH ALWAYS WINS ANY DISCUSSION, AND I BROUGHT UP HOW IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GENERALIZE A HERO IN SUCH A MANNER BECAUSE IT ALL DEPENDS ON HIS/HER PAST/PERSONALITY TRAITS/WHATEVER. DO YOU THINK THE TOTALLY HAPPY AND VALIANT AND NEVER GIVE UP COMMANDER IS GOING TO REACT THE SAME WAY TO LOSING ALL HIS MEN AS JOHNNY McEMO? HUH? DO YOU?
SO DON'T YOU TELL US THAT WE DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING, COUNSELLOR.

AND THEN THERE'S THE SITUATION WHERE THEY GO FROM EMO TO VALIANT COMMANDER. LIKE CELES IN FF6, AFTER SHE LEADS HER TEAM TO DEFEAT KEFKA AND EMPEROR GESTAHL (AND FAILS MISERABLY). AFTER KEFKA DESTROYS THE PLANET, SHE GOES FROM WANTING TO COMMIT SUICIDE TO WANTING TO KICK HIS ASS AND FINDING HER TEAMMATES TO DO JUST THAT.
ANY GIVEN HERO COULD HAVE ANY GIVEN REACTION BASED ON HIS OR HER BACKGROUND. SO THERE.

In the short turn, nothing was accomplished. But when that many people willingly die, they die for a reason. This tale of heroism will be passed on throughout the ages. People will always remember their sacrifice.
And perhaps eons from now, when the great empire finally begins to fall to pieces, the heroes will indeed rise again.

It all returns to nothing. It all comes tumbling down tumbling down tumbling down.
