Chapter 1:
Let the Adventures Begin!!!
Let the Adventures Begin!!!
My years in school are finally over, I thought to myself. And they were. I recently turned 18, I’d just graduated from my Neubeginn’s Secondary Trainer School, and I was legally ready to begin my journey across the Gebiet region. Other regions like Kanto and Johto let ten-year-old children journey across the region completely unsupervised. How responsible is that?!?
Anyways, the region of Gebiet puts its children through Trainer School so that they learn all the things they’ll need for their journey or for their future life if they decide not to go on a journey. I, however, decided to go see Gebiet in all its glory. Then, I wanted to see the whole world. But I had to start with something small and work towards the big goal.
Only three days after my graduation, Professor Zelkova called me to see about my decision.
“So, Damien,” she began, “have you and your parents agreed on what you’ll do?”
“Yes, ma’am,” I replied.
“And?”
“I’ll be travelling throughout Gebiet.”
“SPLENDID!” she exclaimed. “When can you come to my lab to receive your first Pokémon?”
“I can come right now,” I said excitedly.
“Good. Come on over!”
“I’ll be there shortly. Bye!” I hung up the phone and ran into the living room. “MOM! GUESS WHAT!!!”
“Good grief!” said my mom, chuckling. “Calm down. Tell me what’s going on.”
“That was Professor Zelkova on the phone. She wants me to come over to her lab right now to get my—.” I stopped short. I could see a tear starting to well up in her eye.
“To get your first Pokémon,” she finished for me. “So it’s official. You’re going on a journey.” Tears started to roll down her cheeks.
I walked up to her and hugged her. “Mom, don’t start that! You know if you start, I’ll start, and you don’t want me to start, now do you?”
“No, I don’t,” she said. She was beginning to calm down.
“I didn’t think so,” I chuckled. “Look, I know you’re going to worry about me, and I’ve figured out a solution for that.” I pulled out two cell phones from my pocket.
“How could you possibly afford those? You don’t have a job.”
“Professor Zelkova has dealt with this exact situation many times. The worried mom wanting to be able to keep in touch with her child while he or she journeys across the region…it’s a common thing. She’s giving us these phones and paying the bill for us.”
“We can’t do that!” she said. “She’ll be completely broke every month from the amount of times I’ll call you!”
“She told me you’d say that, and she’s prepared for it. She said not to worry about it, that everything will work out as it should.”
“Well, if that’s the case, you should hurry,” she said. “You don’t want to keep the professor waiting.”
“I’ll come back and let you see the Pokémon. I’m sure you’d love to see it!” I said, hoping to keep my mom in good spirits.
“Of course, dear, I’d love to see your new Pokémon,” she said smiling.
“Good! I’ll be back in a few minutes!” I ran out the front door and headed to Professor Zelkova’s lab across town.
After five minutes of excited running, I finally made it to Professor Zelkova’s lab. I barged through the door and ran up to her, completely out of breath.
“I’m here!” I panted.
“Good,” she said. “Here’s some water. You should cool down and catch your breath first.” She handed me a bottle of water, which I chugged down in a matter of seconds.
“…Well…Let’s let you pick your first Pokémon then,” she said slowly.
We walked over to a setup of a computer and a pedestal-like table.
“Go to the computer, and look through what Pokémon I have to choose from,” she said. “I must warn you. There aren’t many. Most of your classmates came yesterday to pick theirs.”
“Can I pick out five or six and let them out? You know, get to know their personalities a bit?” I asked.
“I don’t see why not,” she replied. “None of your classmates even thought of that. Regardless of which Pokémon you pick, I know it’ll be in good hands now.”
“Thanks!” I said happily. “I love all Pokémon, so this is probably going to be difficult.”
I went to the computer and scrolled through the remaining Pokémon. There were only five left, so I pulled all five out of the PC.
“Alright, all of you come out!” I tossed the Poké Balls into the air, and with a near-blinding flash of light, five Pokémon appeared in front of me.
“Bulba…Bulba-saur!” said the one with the bulb on its back.
“Chaaaaaarmander!” cried the little orange one with the flaming tail.
“Squirtle. Squirt Squirtle!” said the turtle-shaped one.
“Eevee!” said the little dog-like Pokémon.
“Chiku!” said the green one with the leaf on its head.
“Hello, everyone!” I said happily. “I’m Damien. I’m here to get to know you all.”
Right when I was done talking, Eevee, Charmander, and Bulbasaur came up to me. Charmander reached out with his claw. “Charmander! Char!” he said in an introductory manner.
“It’s nice to meet you, Charmander,” I said, accepting his handshake.
“Bulbasaur!” said Bulbasaur, extending a vine. I accepted the vine-to-hand-shake.
“EEVEE!” yelled Eevee as it jumped up into my arms.
“Well, hello to you, too!” I said laughing. I put it back on the ground and patted its head. I walked over to Squirtle and Chikorita to see if they wanted to introduce themselves, but when I got close, Chikorita walked off.
Seems like she doesn’t like me, I thought to myself. Oh well.
I walked up to Squirtle. “Hello,” I said. “My name is Damien, and it’s great to meet you!”
Squirtle extended his hand. As I reached out to accept the handshake, he threw out both hands and pushed me. I stumbled backwards and fell over something. It turns out Chikorita had snuck her way behind me to set up a prank with Squirtle.
Professor Zelkova ran over to help me up. “I’m so sorry,” she said. “After I saw you with Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Eevee, I thought these two would have behaved better. Apparently, I was wrong.” She shot an angry glance at the two of them, and they cowered behind her desk.
I looked at her, and back to them. “I think you two may want to go back into the Poké Balls and back to the PC.”
They ran up to me and touched the buttons on their respective Poké Balls. A red laser-like beam of light surrounded them, and they disappeared into the Poké Balls. I put the balls back onto the pedestal and pressed the button to return them back into the PC.
Professor Zelkova walked over to the other side of the room and called the remaining Pokémon to her. “I need to speak with these three in private for a moment,” she said.
“Okay,” I replied. I wonder what she needs to talk to them about.
I heard all three of the Pokémon cry out happily at the same time, and she came back over to me.
“I’ve never seen this before,” she began. “Eevee, Charmander, and Bulbasaur all seem to really like you…”
“I really like all of them, too. It’s going to be impossible to choose.”
“I think Eevee would be the best choice. It has several different possible evolutions. Two are based on friendship, so you have a chance to get any of them, especially since he already likes you so much.”
“Really?” I said. “I’ll take Eevee then.”
Bulbasaur and Charmander looked let down.
Professor Zelkova noticed the two, and addressed them. “You know, I think I’ll let you take Bulbasaur and Charmander, too.”
“REALLY?!?” I exclaimed.
“I can tell you’ll treat them well, and you did so well throughout Trainer School, I think you can be trusted with them. Between you and me, I think you could become a member of the Pokémon League, or even the Champion!”
“Really? You think so?”
“I’m positive. You should start by going to Nichtshier Town. From there you can get to Felstein City, home to Keiko, Master of Stone. With Bulbasaur with you, she’ll be pretty easy, but don’t get complacent. She’s a Gym Leader for a reason.”
“Thanks,” I said. “All of you, return.” The red laser-like beams came out of the Poké Balls, enveloped the Pokémon, and they disappeared. “I’m going to go show my mom right now and tell her about all this! Man, she’s going to be surprised!”
And with that, I ran out the door and back to my house on the other side of town.
“Hey, mom!” I said as I ran through the door.
“Hey, dear,” she replied. “Did you get your Pokémon?”
“You bet I did. I did get some Pokémon!”
“Some?” she said. She looked at me with a confused look on her face.
“Let me introduce you!” I said. I pulled out the Poké Balls and let out my new Pokémon.
“My goodness!” she exclaimed. “She let you have three?”
“Yep! She said that I could probably become a member of the Pokémon League or even Champion!”
“Well, isn’t that something?” she said smiling. “Well, aren’t you three cute. I hope you three will take care of my son. He’s a handful, just to warn you!”
“Mom, you’re embarrassing me!” I said chuckling.
“But seriously, do be careful. There was a report on the news while you were gone. Apparently, someone was attacked and had their Pokémon stolen. With you being a new Trainer, I’m worried.”
“Don’t be,” I said assuringly. “With these three by my side, nothing can go wrong!”
“So, did Professor Zelkova give you directions on where to start?” she asked.
“She did. I’m supposed to go to Nichtshier Town first. From there, I can get to Felstein City to battle the Gym Leader Keiko. She specializes in Rock-types, so Bulbasaur will make things pretty easy.”
“Well, you should head on out so you make it to Nichtshier Town before it gets dark.”
I walked up to her and hugged her. “I love you, mom. I’ll come back to visit periodically.”
“I love you, too, Damien. Make sure you call me when you make it to Nichtshier Town. I won’t be able to stop worrying until then.”
I laughed. “Okay, mom. I’ll make sure to call you.” I called my Pokémon back into their Poké Balls. “I’ll see you later!”
“Bye, honey! Have fun!”
I walked out the door and started down the street. I hadn’t even gone ten feet and I heard one of my Poké Balls drop. I spun around only to be assaulted by a bright flash of light and a force pushing against my chest so hard that I fell over.
“HOLY CRAP! HELP ME! SOMEONE!” I screamed so loudly that I started to go hoarse. All of a sudden, I felt something licking my face.
“Eevee!” cried my Pokémon.
“Oh, dear God!” I said laughing. “You scared the crap out of me!”
“Eev. Eevee,” said Eevee apologetically.
“Looks like you don’t like being in a Poké Ball,” I said. “How about I let you stay out. You can ride in my backpack or walk next to me, your choice!”
“EEVEE!” he cried happily as he jumped into my backpack.
“Let’s go, Eevee!” I said excitedly.
And with that, we headed down the road towards adventure.
