The story begins with Markis Ibrahim awaking from a dream of war. He finds himself in Central Park. Meanwhile, Baron Vladymir Weivyr finds the sword Cruor in the Forstlands near the corpse of Martin Rutilus. Qwaser Weivyr fends off some thugs in California before deciding to go back to Mundas Magica to go through with his plans. The former members of Dark Wing all deal with adjusting back to civilian life and celebrity status. Yolanda Raevyn sleeps through class, Ethan Sorian revels in the attention he receives as he walks through New Vesperita before finding Sofia Cybil as she enjoys a smoothie, surrounded by a score of lovestruck boys. Adden Gae'om greets the crew of the Voidhawk(Rolan Aster, Taggerang Yetst, Raul Staubech, Uvet Staubech, and Jaison Bjartsular) as they arrive at the New Vesperitan aerodrome. They all meet up with Captain Zhang of the Night Haunt. Torran Weivyr appears and scares of Sofia's fan club. Ethan drops the bombshell: they need to go to Mundas Veritas.
The Mage of the Beginning escaped during the final confrontation by hiding in Ostin's body. On Earth. Rolan and the rest of his crew decide to sit this one out, as does Zhang. Sofia says goodbye to Wormy before they leave through the New Vesperitan Gate. Meanwhile, Baron Weivyr examines Cruror on his home island - and Qwaser comes through the Megolin-Mesberia Gate. Back in Mundas Veritas, Markis remembers when he first came into contact with magic, when a mysterious man sold him a book - apparently for free.
Dark Wing finally gathers at the Gate when Cedric the Earthshaker appears. Before they leave, Headmaster Serran sends two hooded Hellans to join them. The twelve of them depart. On Weivyr island, Qwaser confronts Vladimyr. Qwaser steals Cruor and the Baron's soul before leaving.
The Mage visits the shop of Isfrael, looking for a book. Izzy reveals that it is the same book he "sold" to Markis years ago. Furious, he storms out. Dark Wing exits the gate in Washington, D.C. The two mysterious Hellans pay for their passage and illusion charms. They finally let down their hoods and reveal themselves to be twins - born a year apart.
In Boston, Stella Norton has lunch with Krysta Nonem. The two of them are blossoming mages: Stella a Fire Mage, and Krysta a Soul Mage. Krysta drags Stella to Izzy's shop.
The story flashes back to when Jin Raishak rejoined Team Deathblade. They caught up to Dark Wing, but more specifically, Safiria, whom Jin began to torture. Cryon finally speaks to defend his mother, but Jin kills her all the same - and destroys her soul. The ice golem awakens from his nightmare on theDeathblade Friendship. Shadow Ella tries to console Cryon, but Karl reminds her not to give false hope. Cid, the captain, takes them down to the Gate. They plan on going to Mundas Veritas to get money to give Safiria a luxurious funeral. Meanwhile, Izzy gives Stella a ring that can hide her from others, allowing her to practice her magic in secret. She signs the contract without knowing what her payment is.

It becomes clear to Team Friendship that no one on their team (especially Cid) has any idea of how America works. the airship crashes because there is no autopilot system, and Jin appears to take HIS airship back from them - but not before laughing at Team Friendship for such a ridiculous name. Jin roughs up some people who tried to make a fool of him. Team Friendship (currently ship-less) head for the Gate. In D.C. Tristezza Ghiacco does his best to avoid notice, as he accidentally killed his entire family when his new found Ice Magic went out of control. He plans on going to New York, where his uncle is. In NYC, Headmaster Dolan Ranjit of the Veritan Magic Academy muses over the appearance of the Mage of the Beginning on Earth.
Jin sees the news program about Tris and decides to make him his new apprentice. Markis meets with Qwaser, who wants him to enroll in the Veritan Academy. Markis, alone, meets with Headmaster Ranjit. Izzy reluctantly agrees to give Stella her soul back if she works for him. Dark Wing decides to check in with a local mage for advice. Team Friendship decides to go to President Obama and ask for money for a funeral.
Ethan explains the Magical Association of Mundas Veritas to the rest of his team. Torran detects the presence of Team Friendship in the city, who have changed into clothes that actually make them stand out more. Jin makes contact with Tristezza. Cole, a local Magi, also detects Team Friendship's presence. Markis finishes his interview with Headmaster Ranjit.
Dolan's daughter, Kristina takes Markis on a short tour of the Academy before leaving with her friends to go party. When Team Friendship tries to enter the White House, the guard mistakes them for the comedy troupe they were expecting ans lets them in. Jin speaks with Tris and convinces him that he can help him learn to be a mage and decides to take him to New York in the airship.
