Alright. I've proposed this sort of thing before, but now I've sort of ironed it out.
Here's the setting. The year is 2030 and the whole planet is going through a third world war. The US and China have both collapsed and are currently fighting brutal civil wars, whilst the EU and Russia are pounding at each other. It should also be noted that Russia isn't the Russia we know today. Its government collapsed during the Second Great depression of 2016 and the current regime sees itself as a successor of the Soviet Union with the "National Communist Party of all the Russias" in power. The EU is a sort of co-operational economic confederacy.
The rest of the world is divided between the Eastern Co-Prosperity sphere (Japan, India, and and the Bolivian Union (South America). They're locked in a war for the pacific and Africa's resources.
However, right before nukes start dropping, I decide to totally rip off Harry Turtledove and have some aliens invade. But these aliens aren't any sort of unified empire. If anything, they seem to be a polygoted mix of multiple races. Some of these races are even fighting each other. Some factions of Humanity band together to fight them off, whilst others keep fighting amongst themselves.
It's eventually revealed that the aliens are in fact not some sort of invading force, but are rather refuges. Indeed, had their former empires actually tried to invade earth, we would have gotten our asses kicked. They are fleeing from some sort of Eldritch Hivemind that seeks to feed its boundless hunger and the aliens are only here to refuel before they leave again. However, in order to refuel, they need vast quantities of water; over 37% of our oceans to be exact.
Humanity has to make a choice: to fight off these aliens, or to join with them and get the hell out of dodge.
The story itself would probably take place about three days after the aliens show up and start shooting.
