Magic in this story works in a way similar to that of the earlier final Fantasy games. There are four schools of magic- white, black, gray, and green. For the most part mages only specialize in one type of magic. Also, instead of having a separate pool of energy for casting spells, magic instead draws upon the caster's own life force. Using magic tends to make people feel hungry or tired, and casting high level spells often causes people to faint.
WHITE
White magic is the magic used to heal people. Instead of having various tiers of spells like in video games, in this case there is just one group of spells, the power of which depends on the amount of energy used by the caster. There is a spell called Cure which is used to heal all varieties of physical injuries, then there are various other spells used for curing specific sicknesses and ailments. There is also a spell called Resurrect, which has the ability to bring a dead person back to life. However, this spell can only be cast by the most powerful mages, and casting it requires the caster to give up their own life.
BLACK
Black magic functions in a very similar way to white, the biggest difference being that instead of existing to help people, the primary purpose of black magic is to cause harm to others. A mage using black magic can harness the elements and bend them to their will. They can also cause the very sicknesses and ailments that white magic can cure. The most powerful Black spell is known as Death, and it causes the target of the spell to die instantaneously. However, this spell can only be cast by the most powerful mages, and casting it requires the caster to give up their own life.
NOTE: There are those who are capable of using both White and Black magic, though they are incapable of being as skilled in either as mages who specialize in just one of the two.
GRAY
Gray magic is the magic of summoning and conjuration. Using more energy allows for the summoning of more powerful creatures, and for the conjuration of larger and more stable objects. Common mistakes with gray magic include summoning something which the caster is not powerful enough to control, and not using enough energy on a conjuration to keep it stable, causing it to evaporate. In general practice, Gray magic is the most costly school in terms of energy.
GREEN
Finally, there is Green magic. Green magic is used entirely by druids, and allows a druid to take control of plants and some animals. The energy used for this magic is transferred to that which is being controlled as a sort of payment. Through the use of Green magic, plants can be made to move, often used to create traps for enemies, or to skewer them with sharp branches. As the elves are a nonviolent people, the magic is usually used for one of it's other purposes- it allows for the healing of people, plants, and animals. It is not as effective as White magic, but it is still quite useful. Finally, powerful druids are capable of even transforming themselves temporarily into animals, though there are only a few who are capable of this.
