Obviously there shoul dbe a religion built up around the lanterns and their "holy light", and of course, a darker, counter religion worshipping the creeping chaos beyond the walls.

Of course. To both of those.
I suppose it's a matter of how powerful the light cult/religion should be (I'm toying with Lamplighters as a name) and how widely spread it is across Tlalaxontyle

I'm not sure what kind of story we should do here. I keep thinking of beginning it as a detective tale somehow...what do you think?

I'll get back to you on that. It's going to be something that spirals out of control.

"Magic" in this setting is dangerous and difficult. For magic to do anything (in any setting) it has to ignore basic laws of physics and warp reality. Humans, unassisted cannot do that in this world.
But miasma can.
Do you see where I'm going with this?
Some genius came up with the idea that ingesting (or just exposing oneself to) miasma would be a good idea. It wasn't. So that was a bust.
But after much trial and error, a method was developed. Smuggled miasma (using specially polarized vials) can be brought inside the walls without corrupting or dissipating. With reality crystals, intricate patterns are designed in a large open area and the miasma dumped in the space between them, creating a swirling pattern of madness within order. Cue the horrible chanting and devotions to terrible gods.
Depending on who/what is called (or even if they answer) any number of events can take place. Because of the amount of time and effort involved (particularly getting the miasma) such summonings are quite rare, even if the rituals themselves are common practice for cultists.
Dealing with these entities is not recommended, even if they are contained by the realight.
No summoning has ever been recorded (not to say they didn't happen, but that no one has ever recorded one) although tales exist in eldritch tomes and hushed stories.
So, is it magic? Not so much. But that's what we got.
