Shadow magic
History
Millennia ago, there was only one tribe. All schools of magic existed and harmony spread through the large tribe at the foot of The End, a monstrous mountain that overshadowed the continent. Volcanic ash provided rich soil for crops, shade for the people, and a place of worship. Homage was often paid to The End, which was believed to be a portal to the end of all things, where only the dead could learn the secrets. The volcano was dormant, however ash and dust would occasionally rain from its peak. As the ultimate offering, a ritual was devised where the end of each cycle (season), a trek would be made by the entirety of the tribe to the summit of the volcano and all the season’s dead would be cast into The End to gain the knowledge of the afterlife, and to become ash spread their remaining life forces into the year’s crops. Bodies were preserved through blood magic as best they could, however the last to die in the cycle would remain untouched as an honor and cast into the flames last. It was seen as the only fresh offering to The End.
Thousands of years passed without struggle, until the day of the eruption. The End exploded with the fury of hell and the continent began to crack and reshape. The tribe scattered into three main groups, one settling north, one west, and one south.
The centuries immediately after the eruption were the most difficult. Ash and smoke had eclipsed the sky, rendering shadow magic nearly useless and a small ice age followed as well. Freezing the waters around the south and west, which was gray with the ashes of their ancestors spit back from The End, a constant reminder of where they had come from and a warning for them to never again return.
Nearly two thousand years later, the tribes are now settled in their new territories.
Tribes
One- After The End erupted and the continent split and reshaped, they took refuge in the north eastern region of the land as near the volcano as could be managed. As time moved on they became the most advanced of the tribes, focusing on knowledge rather than war. They have had little contact with the other two tribes, civil or otherwise. They still respect The End and continue the Death Parade each cycle, hoping to never again repeat what act enraged it. Blood magic is their primary school, however talent appears occasionally for the other schools and it is certainly not neglected. Scrying only exists in this tribe, theoretically because of the close proximity they keep to The End, however only a small cycle of three exists at any given time. It is believed that enough energy exists after the eruption to facilitate three at a time.
A school of potions and novice chemistry exists as well, which further separates them from their primitive former tribemates. Over the past few millennia, they have built an expansive library full of tomes and scrolls covering every topic imaginable. The head master of the vast school is currently being Julian Curintis.
Two- Finding their way to the western coast of the continent, which is mostly barren, survival became a primary focus. Eventually it was necessary to split into smaller sub tribes, all of them having leaders, who serve under the grand leader, currently filled by King Halrend. The King’s Tribe is the only stationary group, surrounding a moderately sized oasis in the center of the barren waste. The other tribes are simply nomadic, occasionally returning every other cycle to pay tribute to the King, rather than The End, a custom only remembered through oral tradition.
No religions or schools of thought exist within this realm, for the king banned is millennia ago, seeing the dangers it brought them during the hardships of the eruption. As for magic, all three main schools (no scrying) are prominent throughout the kingdom. However, the traveling tribes focus on blood magic for healing and the savoring of nutrients in the blood to help last longer between meals. The nomadic warriors specialize in shadow magic as their greatest resource. The constant sunlight and short nights mean that they can make shadows to manipulate at almost any given time with almost anything they possess.
Given the constant burden of controlling many tribes at once, and the sub group’s constant fighting for survival, they have become quite a formidable warring nation, with disputes raging on every few centuries with their island neighbors, who constantly refuse their settlements.
Three- Fleeing south after the eruption, they were forced across the frozen sea to the forbidden Outer Realm. A lush forested island that was difficult to navigate. The tribe soon became expert map makers and explorers. Soon they made the deep jungle their home, archiving the flora and native animals. They have learned to utilize the sparse land that exists within the dense forest with almost little sunlight able to peak through the giant trees. The lower levels cultivate mushrooms and any medicinal flora and fungi, whilst they cleverly created sky gardens in the upper and more lit areas of the trees. A vast network of walkways and houses flows along the middle sections of the jungle where the tribes live in relative peace in their green kingdom, led by King Brastian.
Their only troubles come directly from the desert wanders who periodically attempt to ferry themselves across the waters and into Outer Realm in order to search for food or settle. They are always sent back to their own land, sometimes more violently than others, though most every encounter results in a small war between the two tribes.
Blood magic and necromancy are found on the island, though shadow magic does exist. However it is only ever utilized by the farmers who settle at the top of the trees who have no space or ways to carry tools with them safely. Shadow magic is used as makeshift equipment to till the fields and tend the crops, which are then sent down by net and rope. Blood magic is used mostly for defense and hunting on the ground floor and within the villages, seeing as how their medicines come from the native plants.
Though legends of The End and their ancient religion still exist, the tribe has since evolved away from its uses and focuses on revering their new providers, the sky and the threes.
