The Severing of the bridge between Mundus Magica and Mundus Veritas left impacts upon both worlds. In Mundus Magica, it resulted in societal upheaval and eventually, collapse. In Mundus Veritas, however, it was the beginning of a new era, an era of advancement and discovery.
The massacre of Chicago and the Blood Cult uprising ripped aside the veil of secrecy that had protected the realm of magic on Earth. Suddenly the world was aware of mages and magic in general. Within months of the truth becoming public knowledge, conflicts had begun to pop up all around the world. Before things could get out of hand, the Mage of the Beginning addressed the world, calling for all the mages of Earth to immigrate to Mundus Magica. And most did. No longer safe in their anonymity, mages sought a world of their own. The Mage of the Beginning cut the ties old Earth.
So began the Earth's exploration into magic. Very few magical humans stayed behind, but those that did quickly became coveted assets and a new "arms race" began between the powerful nations of the world. Some effort was made to re-connect with Mundus Magica, but efforts proved fruitless and were eventually the idea was discarded completely.
Within a decade the UN had begun to plan for the eventual reappearance of magc in their populations. While the Mage had taken the current generations of mages with him to Mundus Magica, magic itself had not abandoned Earth, and the leaders of the world were prepared for the eventual return of mages. And so, the early half of the twenty-first century became a tumultuous time as changes in social opinion affected the fates of mages everywhere. In many regions, often spearheaded by religious fundamentalism, magic was seen as evil, and magic users persecuted. By the year 2028, however, magic was becoming more widely accepted in the wider world. With its acceptance came the inevitable outcry for mage rights and social recognition. In many ways, it aided in mages benefitting from using their talents for gainful employment. But with this encouragement for mage rights came radicalism.
Two major incidents, occurring almost in tandem, are what led to mages becoming enslaved to the nations of earth. The first being the Paris Attack of 2035, in which a radical mage terrorist group seized control of several key junctures of Paris and killed or injured four hundred people. Whether this incident sparked the war, or it was simply the final straw, within a week World War Three began.
In the first months of the war, the United States government passed the first bill that drafted mages into the military. Other nations soon followed, and before long the war was being fought over magical supremacy as much as territory.
The Treaty of Berlin in 2042 ended the war, and saw the beginnings of the Mundus Veritas of today. Formed during the war were the North American Federation and the European Union, two of the world's leading super powers formed to combat the ever growing power of Russia and China, who were inevitably close to forming a supernation of their own.
From this war, and the laws passed during this time came the system put in place to deal with mages that are still used in modern times: Mages, upon a certain age are required to perform military service. Mages, in the eyes of the world leaders had become national assets to be used, rather than citizens. Over the last several centuries, several conflicts and concessions have arisen that grant mages some leniency in this, but ultimately this law is still in effect across all Earth controlled territories.
World War Three sparked another scientific leap for humanity. The most notable of these being mankind's first tangible presence in space. The NAF Lunar colony Utopia was successfully established in 2050 and by 2056 was the first functional colony of mankind in outer space. The next decade saw rapid colonization of the moon, and quickly became a source of tension as factions began disputing land claims. Ultimately to avoid another war the entirety of the Lunar colonization effort was turned over to the oversight of the UN.
The turn of the century saw mankind's next hallmark achievement in space exploration: the Thaumaturgical Sublight Drive. The first and most successful instance of magitech in Earth's history. In a combination of magic and science first achieved by scientists of the EU, the TSD gave mankind the ability to quickly traverse the solar system, opening up new avenues for exploration and colonization.
The next century saw several major events in human history. The first was the official formation of the Oceanic Cooperative Union (member nations being notably Korea, Japan, the Philippines and Australia) and the Coalition of Communist States (China, Taiwan, Russia, Mongolia and Ukraine). These two up and coming super nations threatened the balance of power established by the NAF and EU and driving tensions high. The next conflict did not come from Earth, however. in 2119, the Martian government declared its sovereignty from Earth. The conflict that broke out, while lasting only a week, was bloody and costly for both sides, but ultimately the new Martian government wrestled control of their planet and established their own monarchy.
In 2130 the UN exploratory ship Exodus successfully established a foothold in the Arcturus star system, signifying mankind's first step outside of its own system. The first Arcturus system planet to be colonized was named Genesis. Disaster in late 2140 upon the prototype of the first "Gate". For several decades scientists had been work on ways to cover the distance between star systems without relying on FTL travel (even with which took months to travel between systems). The answer of course, came from the experimental science of magitech. Since the successful creation of the TSD Drive magitech had been a hit or miss field: somethings worked, others did not. Magic itself wasn't as easy to harness as science. Scientists attempted to recreate the ancient Gates that allowed passage between Mundus Veritas and Magica in times of old. The initial test...less than successful. Speculations are still abound as to the cause of the failure of the Arcturus Gate, but the result was the complete destruction of planet Genesis.
For the next several decades no more attempts at Gate technology were made. Arcturus continued to be colonized regardless. It wasn't until 2174 that Gate teleportation was successfully used to transport ships from the Sol system to the Arcturus System. Through these decades, Mars came into its own as a center of trade and military power as the inventors of, and primary users of Wanzer military technology. Also during the 2170s came the formation of the Corporate Alliance, a free enterprise system of government controlled by a council of mega corporations. The rise of this "council" came after decades of corporations moving their main operations off of Earth and into vast space stations where they were free to conduct business without national oversight.
The next several decades into the early 2200s saw on again and off again violence between the various factions of Earth, and the rise of several key issues. Namely, human cloning, cybernetics and blood magic.
In 2202, the first human was successfully cloned and mass produced as servant labor in the OCU. What followed was two decades of heated human rights debates and internal strife. The use of human clones was outright banned in both the EU and NAF, while the Coalition enforces heavy laws against it. In the OCU, however, cloning and clone usage is still legal, which often draws ire towards the nation. The brief "Weekend War" of 2210 between the NAF and OCU struck a blow to their usage of clones, as a concession acknowledged and enforced by the UN clones are not permitted to be used in military situations.
Another field of research that was being heavily explored in this time was cybernetics. The use of drones and automated "mechs" had been in use for nearly forty years by this point (primarily in the Coalition) and so scientists now looked to bettering the human body through technology. Brief attempts were made to integrate magitech into cybernetic research, but it yielded very poor results, so cybernetics remained a solely nonmagical field. With the advancement of cybernetics came a new wave of humanitarian issues, much like those of the magical population of the previous centuries. While many saw human cybernetic research as the next step of human evolution, there were just as many who reacted with fear and hatred towards it.
This hatred, coupled with another rising issue in the EU gave way to the rise of a theocratic renaissance. The wars that sprung up during the past several centuries gave the militaries of the earth very liberal views towards magic on the battlefield. This gave rise to the use of previously considered "forbidden" arts in combat: necromancy and blood magic primarily. As mages were heavily regulated, this was never too much of a problem, until the early 2200s in the EU. The European Union was notably less rigid in their control of their mage population, and over the years even became lax in policing magic, citing humanitarian reasons. While seen as a good thing for mage rights, it also led to a an alarming rise in blood magic-related crime across Europe.
Out of fear and anger at the horrors beginning to unfold in their land, citizens of the EU began to rise up in retaliation as the government tried unsuccessfully to quell both them and the rising blood magic problem in their nations. Frightened and angry citizens united under the banner of the long neglected Church for protection. Before long militant groups of citizens acting in the name of the church and calling themselves simply The Order, began waging "holy wars" across Europe to eliminate blood mage "heretics" and their followers. The Order swiftly became a world-wide organization after its successes in Europe, and eventually even spreading beyond Earth. The Order quickly became the face of the Church until the two were seen as one and the same. By the late 2250s the Order (and by extension the church) had become a political power in its own right. While owning no land of its own but for the Vatican City of Earth, the Order is to this day feared for its large number of zealous warriors and vast fleet of ships that wander the galaxy. The Order's hatred began to extend beyond simply blood mages, eventually to mages in general, and then beyond. When cybernetic advancement took the world stage, the chruch took a firm stance against it, and thus the Order lashed out against it violently. The Order of today is a vast, zealous religious organization that hunts and wages war against those they see as "heretics" and abominations", that is, mages and cyborgs. Those that they see as "inhuman".
At the turn of the twenty-fourth century, mankind had begun to grow restless again as the nations of Earth continue to struggle over territory in the Outer Colonies, and the Corporate Alliance begins to butt heads with the ever belligerent Order. Then, in 2309, humanity quite suddenly came into contact with an alien species.
The Ahvv Empire, is what they called themselves. Since their contact with the UN little has been heard about them or their intentions, or even what they look like. All that is known is that a new source of potential conflict has entered the stage.
It is the year 2312, and a single spark could set humanity ablaze in conflict once more.
