The Defenders
Prologue
“Arrgh!!!” a soldier screamed, jumping from the rock he had been hiding behind as it exploded into a million pieces, showering the man in rock fragments. He rolled away from the enemies that were almost upon him now, and he stood up as quickly as possible. Another enemy grenade landed next to him, embedding itself slightly into the bright orange soil. The man leapt into a nearby crater that was about six feet deep, and his landing creating a cloud of dust of the same color as the soil that covered all of this planet, which made his throat itch and made the man cough. As he heard the grenade explode on the surface above him, he was glad that that this foreign planet was covered in craters like the one he was taking cover in. He paused for a moment to rest and to listen to the noise coming in through the speakers in his helmet.
“Jake! You still with us, buddy?” he heard a voice ask. The voice belonged to the soldier’s friend, Bob Andrarl. The soldier, Jake Thada pressed a small button on the exterior of his helmet, activating the built in microphone.
“Yeah, I’m still alive. For now, anyway.” he replied, and he started to climb out of the crater slowly, aware that his enemies were most likely up there waiting for him.
“I see ya.” Bob said on the com channel in his rural accent, which served as a constant reminder to Jake that members of their organization came from all over the world, from large cities to small farmsteads. “Hold on a sec.” Bob said. Jake heard the crack of a sniper rifle firing four times, and once he was out of the crater he saw that all five of his enemies were lying on the ground, dead. He walked over to them and looked down at one of the monsters. They sure were ugly little things. They were covered in thick black scales which had apparently been burned from their original color, whatever that was. There was also the teeth. These guys had huge teeth, and they were sharp enough to cut through just about anything. The thing that bugged Jake about these things the most though, was their eyes. The small demons had large, yellow eyes in triangular sockets, and they had blood red pupils.

“Thanks.” Jake said into his microphone, then he thought back to the four shots and five kills. “How did you manage that?” he asked his friend.
“Heh, stupid little idiots stood one behind the other.” Bob replied happily. It was just like him to criticize the enemy instead of gloating about his own skills, Jake thought. “Anyway,” Bob continued, “did you secure the objective?” Jake flashed his friend a wide grin.
“When have I ever not completed a mission?” he asked Bob, laughing. Bob may not like to gloat, but Jake enjoyed it. Bob let out a sigh of relief and ran his hands through his hair, which was normally blond, but was coated in the dirt from this planet, which made it appear bright orange. In fact, right now the thin man was a dirty, sweaty mess.
“Quit starin’ at me like that.” Bob said, mildly annoyed. “You don’t look so great yourself.” Jake looked at his hands, and saw that he too coated in soil. “First thing I’m gonna do when I get home is take a shower.” Bob remarked. His expression suddenly became serious. “but that won’t happen until we win this thing.”
“Well then it’s a good thing we won this battle.” a familiar voice said from behind them. Both men turned around and saw their teammate Jane Dorimetri walking towards them. Jake watched her approach. He may have been a sight for sore eyes, but she still looked as good as ever. Her light brown hair was neatly combed and somehow devoid of orange residue, and her formfitting black jumpsuit was relatively clean. How she could avoid getting dirty was beyond Jake. Then again, she wasn’t the one jumping around dodging grenades. A wave of pain flowed through him, and he fell to his knees as he was sharply elbowed in the ribs by Bob.

“You can admire her all you want when we get back home.” Bob growled, quietly enough that Jane didn’t hear. Jake was shocked. Were his thoughts really that easy to read?
“Anyway,” Jane continued, “what did you mean by ‘win this thing’? Try to keep in mind that we’re only here to find out why they’re here. After our ship crashed we don’t have enough manpower to fight more of these things than we have to.” Bob let out a loud laugh.
“Numbers mean nothing to me!” he exclaimed. “Bring on every single monster, I’ll take ‘em all down!” Jake sighed. So much for not gloating. Without warning, Jane kicked Bob in the shin, causing him to fall to the ground next to Jake.
“Don’t get cocky.” Jane scolded him. “We’ve done enough fighting for one day. Let’s head to the cave now. We went through the trouble of taking it from those monsters, we might as well use it.” As Jake and Bob stood up and stumbled in the direction of the cave that had been the objective of this battle, Jane unclipped a communication device from her belt and spoke into it. “Guys, we got it. Get over here ASAP.”
Later, in the cave, the team had just finished unpacking their sleeping bags, starting a fire, cooking some of the canned food that they had brought with them, and setting up the machine that would allow them to contact their leader on Earth. While eating a particularly foul tasting can of beans, Jake looked into the depths of the cave. From where he was sitting it seemed to go on forever. Who knew what could be hiding down there, just waiting to attack the unsuspecting people who had wandered in? Suddenly there was a noise at the mouth of the cave, and its three occupants jumped up and grabbed their weapons in the blink of an eye. In the entrance to the cave stood two men, one with his hands in the air and a frightened look on his face, the other looking quite amused. The amused one, Joe Notpmoc, spoke.

“You seem a little stressed out.” he said, chuckling. “You call us back from scouting to point guns at us?” The three in the cave lowered their weapons, and the frightened man, Bill Rhogorhin, put his arms down and let out a sigh of relief. Bob glared at Joe as he and Bill walked in to join the others.
“Shut yer trap, will ya?” he spat. “It’s been a rough day and we don’t need any of yer smart mouthin’.” Jane kicked him in the shin again.
“We’ve got enough to deal with without you two bickering.” she said angrily. Jake couldn’t help but laugh at that, and was promptly kicked as well.
“I sent you there to kill demons, not each other.” a voice said from near the wall behind Jane. She whirled around and saw that the large communications device near the wall of the cave had activated by itself, and on the main screen she saw their leader, Zac Nosnum. He didn’t look happy.
“I…uh…” Jane stammered.
“Nevermind.” Zac said with a sigh. “How goes the mission?”
“Not well.” Jane replied. “Our ship was blown up before we could land, killing all but five of us. We managed to secure this cave as a base of operations, but we still have no idea what the enemy is doing here.” Zac thought for a minute, his face expressionless.

“Alright,” he began, “I’ll send a ship to get you guys out of there. It should arrive around noon tomorrow. See what you can find out before then.” He paused, trying to think of something else to say. “Oh, and try not to get this one blown up.”
“Yes, sir!” everyone said. Zac terminated the link, and the screen went blank.
Jake volunteered to stand watch first, and the only other thing said before the others went to sleep was when Joe complained about how they were fighting monsters on distant plants while their leader was at home, probably enjoying a soda or something.
Several hours passed. Jake walked over to where Jane slept to wake her up for her shift. As he stood over her he noticed that though she was always yelling while she was awake, she at least looked peaceful in her sleep. He crouched down to gently shake her awake, when he heard a strange noise from outside. It was a quiet whirring that was slowly getting louder. Jake stepped outside of the cave to check it out, and nearly fell over in shock. The whirring was the sound of hundreds, no- thousands of enemy fighters flying overhead. There was only one place an army of this size could be going. Earth.
Jake’s gaze was then directed towards the ground about a mile away. At first, he thought a shadow was creeping across the land. Another look revealed that it was a massive group of demons headed towards the cave! For a second, Jake just stood there in shock. Then he ran into the cave, screaming his head off. The others woke up and soon found out what was going on. Joe was sent to find out how many enemies there were and to see if there was any way to escape. The entire time, Jane held her communication device up to her ear, looking terrified. Jake tried to think of anything he could say to help her, but could think of nothing. Suddenly, Jane’s mouth fell open in a stunned expression, as Joe relayed the information. Bob approached her.

“Well?” he asked, “What does the scout say about the number of enemies?”
Jane said, her voice almost a whisper, “'There's at least ten thousand, but many more than that', is what he said.”
“WHAT?” Bob exclaimed, “Ten thousand?” Jane brought the device to her mouth with shaking hands. “Is th-there an-any way to escape?” she stammered. No response came. “H-hello?” she said meekly. No answer came, and she put the device down, shaking her head. Jake looked at the ground and clenched his fists. Bill panicked even more. Jane started crying. Even Bob looked upset.
Jane took a step out of the cave to see what# was happening… and exploded, spraying the ground and entrance of the cave with blood. A second later a demon jumped into the cave with a grenade pin hanging from one of its claws. Jake almost charged at it in a senseless rage, when several more demons came flooding into the cave. The remaining three men pulled from their belts machines which produced a blade of pure energy. Bill was immediately overwhelmed and ripped to shreds by dozens of sharp claws. Bob and Jake stood back to back, fighting off hundreds of enemies. Unfortunately, there were thousands of them.
Finally, Bob couldn’t take any more. He fell to the ground, leaving Jake by himself. The single remaining human turned, and saw that his friend was pointing at the machine that let them contact Earth. Jake ran to it and turned it on. As soon as the screen lit up, Jake uttered his final sentence: “They are coming.”

Cool. I'm still writing Seedling... though I might change ti to "Labyrinthine" because Seedling is too complicated. Labyrinthine is a simple plot.
