The Order
It was raining. It always seemed to rain on nights like these. Lightning split the night sky, lighting up the world for a brief instant. Bathed in the storm, a great cathedral rose up into the night. It had the typical gothic style of all cathedrals from the nineteenth century. Gargoyles grinned from their perches upon tall towers and points around the great church. Stained glass windows reflected darkly from various places.
It stood proudly, a regale symbol of pride and hope in the darkness. And it was dark. Nights in Rome always were. In the night, two silent shadows detached themselves from the shadow of the cathedral. They slipped quietly across the cobblestoned road and through a section of old, almost derelict buildings adjacent to the church. This was one of the oldest parts of the city and though it brought in a reasonable tourist income each year, was still for all intensive purposes, abandoned.
Except for a few. Lightning struck again, accompanied by a great crack of thunder. The two shadows lit up briefly, turning into the forms of two hooded men. Each wore black hooded jackets buttoned up, leaving their faces shrouded in darkness. The coats long coats stretched down to their ankles, and appeared almost as robes from the belt strapped across their waists. A stylized white cross was stitched onto left breast of each jacket.

Both moved through the darkness quickly, intently. Through the rain, the two men hurried on wordlessly toward their goal. They sloshed through the empty streets until they came upon a small house, almost imperceptibly different from all the other old homes of this section of Rome. Still silent, the two men opened the door and slipped inside.
The house was cold and dark, having been abandoned decades before. There remained only a coat hanger by the door and a small, wooden table in the center of the tiny one-room home. The first man walked over to the far end of the room and withdrew a match and tinder from the small pocket on his jacket front. He bent over the small clay fireplace built up against the wall and attempted to light a fire.
A moment later light sparked to life and a fire began lighting up the small room. The second man stood over the old, age-worn table, staring down at it. The second man joined him, looking down at the table.
Over the years many cracks and scratches had littered the surface of the wooden table, but there was one set of scratches that stood out as distinctively odd.
Someone had carved two words into the table.
Atlanta, America.

For a long moment the two men stood wordlessly, absorbing the information. It was after a considerable silence that the first man finally spoke, shattering the palpable silence in the room.
“So it is in America then.” He said, an apparent Italian accent in his voice. The second man nodded.
“This is becoming more and more frequent. America is turning into a hot bed of activity.” He said. His voice also carried traces of Italian descent, but it was diluted from years of traveling to other places, leaving his voice for the most part neutral. The first man turned and walked over to the fire and bent over it, warming himself carefully.
“God must have some purpose for it.” He said, watching the flames dance before his eyes. His comrade joined him at the fire, extending his hands over the warm flames.
“More likely it is the Vatican’s purposes.” He snorted. “We cannot possibly comprehend God’s plan. Only serve. If the church wants us to go to America we go.”

The first man grunted in agreement. “It is so. Actually I’m not at all surprised that it is located in America. That country has grown into a cesspool for heresy and Protestants.” He all but spat the word. Man number two said nothing, but stood up and stretched.
“Then we will have to be cautious. The Enemy will have taken root there.”
“Then we shall purge them. As always.” The first man nodded and muttered,
“God wills it.”
Both men bowed their heads in reverence for a moment. They spent the night in that house, and the next morning set out again. Their mission was that of God and the Church.
Of the Order.
