EVA: The series is very strong in a couple areas: the robot fighting is good for a mindfuck (flesh and blood in robots? @_@) and the entire series is done well artistically. A lot of the characters were really good up until the end (except Shinji, who in my opinion is enough of a waffler to run for president) and the plot for the first 17 or so episodes is very good (kids in robots fight robots, cool). My issue is a couple-fold:
1) Shinji, stop being such a coward and try to realize what the fuck you're doing. Shinji is a very cowardly guy; there's something grating to me about guys who run away from EVERYTHING and never learn or get tougher. I understand that's his character, but he didn't develop at all. At the outset he is a timid guy, after his first battle he's afraid of the robot fighting. K cool, no problem, it's understandable when you get fucked up in a bleeding robot first time. Then he goes into training with EVA and learns how to use and fight with it. He's go so far as to learn to cartwheel and pirouette synchronized with another EVA; but apperantly him and his commander have no appreciation for tactics or any kind of analytical thinking. "Sit approximately 100 meters away from a floating thing until you decide to unload all your ammunition that only works once halfway through the series" does not constitute a good battle plan, nor is it an effective way to gauge your targets capabilities. After the second angel you fight, when EVERYONE talks about the rapidity at which the angels learn and adapt, you might want to stay further away and provoke it to see what it can do, especially when ALL of them either move like greased lightning or have ranged weaponry that fucks you up in one hit. Stop flipping out already. You'd think after you killed one or two angels you'd at least develop a coping mechanism to the violence; at the very least taking a firmer stand on one side of the "I will fight/ I will not" line. And stop screaming at teh top of your lungs. You'll sound like a smoker at 20.
2) The technology is fail and the past story is very weak. You have a whole city that can go underground, but your biological battlesuits need a cord....all of you are fired. You have a trio of supercomputers that run on what appear to be steam pipes. The woman who made the steam-pipe computer was a genius, but choked a kid to death for an insult. Uh huh. The wife with a newborn kid decides to be unnecessarily involved in a super-dangerous experiment so her toddler son can "see what the future will be like" or some shit. Too bad that PhD didn't give you any common sense.
3) The religious allusions added nothing. This is where the biggest flamewars I've ever seen come from, so I'm gonna go ahead and say I must not "get it". We're talking about Japan and the biological monstrosities that men create and all of a sudden: "Get the Lance of Longinus and pitch that motherfucker into space....and by the way, the Lance was actually like 300 feet long". After you trim away all the allusion, there's nothing underneath. I kept hearing "...so Man tried to create a new God". That doesn't add any depth for me. We've been trying to do similar things since Frankenstein, big deal. we seem to have fucked it up royally as usual. This crosses into the tech one, but how did we figure out this stuff? Again, we can create hundreds of soulless Rei's and "theoretically" turn liquid soup into a person (the theory didn't pan out) but the suit needs a plug.
I really liked the middle of the series, the dynamic between the stable pilots was awesome (for instance, the episodes where they synchronized dance and the episode where all the power went out and they climbed up the tunnel were awesome and my favorite). But as the series drew to a close, everyone starting wigging out . Shinji...oh wait, he's sill a bitch (to give him a little credit, being turned into soup is probably not good for you). Asuka was understandable because it's gotta be bad when someone invades your mind, but she pissed me off royally (and again, the tech) because she and ALL the scientists CAN'T SEEM TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO IMPROVE SYNCHRO RATES. They watch a steady decline and they're all "Well shit, can't use this one". No insight at all. There's no psychiatrist to help the pilots, they don't have any drugs to alter your mindset (I'm talking even standard depressants and stimulants); they're just stuck. Might want to do some more research guys.
