The only reason I read classical lit is becasue my English classes require it of me. I have no desire to go out and read something from the 1800's. Only a few books have kept my interest from that time, and one was Frankenstein. I didn't feel smarter after reading them, I didn't feel enlightened. No, indeed I felt as thought I had wasted my time. Jane Eyre, The Awaknening, Last of the Mohicans, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and now Wuthering Heights: all of these are classical lit, but i never finished any of them (Wuthering Heights excluded as I am still "reading it") because it was tedious and uninteresting. Futhermore, I got the gist of them from Wikipedia articles and Sparknotes. Scratch that. Last of the Mohicans I did finish, but only because I had seen the movie prior to that. You can't claim to want to be a writer and ignore all past precedent. Just because you didn't like some of the books you had to read for school in the past doesn't mean everything ever written before 1900 sucks. What's more, why would you even bother taking AP Lit if you hate classic literature as much as you claim? Why is it that you guys call me pretentious whenever I point out an area you can better yourselves in? Trying to persuade you people not to be ignorant is like trying to straighten out the Leaning Tower of Piza by standing next to it and pushing. It's worse than just mediocrity because you've erected a staunch defense for your own lazy acceptance of falling short of excellent (or even acceptable). Justify all you want, but I'm about three steps away from going on another rampage of brutal honesty.

The following reasons explain why we are having this pseudo-flame war: 1) You automatically discount any books we read as "juvenile" literature, despite the fact that you haven't even read any of the books in which you are criticizing. Just like everything written before 1900 isn't crap, everything written after 1990 isn't juvenile, sub-par, pointless romps. 2) (minor complaint) You always criticize our reading habits as if you're some all knowing, transcendent douche bag. Lucco, just because you read War and Peace, it doesn't mean that you can think of yourself as a literature snob. 3) idk. As the British say it, "Taking the piss out."

Lucco is impressive. Hell, he may be the smartest person i know. His attitude, however, can both delight and piss me off.
