exactly.
Also, I'm still working on the Angels. Exactly why they are humanoid this time around and such. I figure at the very least I have handwave it and say "because".

We could link it to judaism/islam and say that these are angels that refused to bow to man's dominance

What did I say in my notes? Um, the "second impact" of this universe broke up Adam's power and created the Angels...the cores scattered...I think I can just say "yeah, they're humanoid" and be fine.

After reducing Adam to the embryonic state, Seele (or, likely, another organization backed by Seele) extracted DNA samples from it. Each of these DNA samples went on to become the Angels. Seele is sending the Angels themselves. Nerv's PR department, holds that the Angels are a terrorist organization.

They're like anti superheroes? nice.
Just something I'd like to throw out there.
You know how most alt-universe fics still follow a sort of formula based on the episodes in the show?
Fuck that. Let's make this almost totally original. Sure, we'll throw in plot elements from the show every here and there, but, for the most part, let's get funky with it.

yeah, I'm working on that. I took another look at the EvaGeeks entry on Extracanonical Angels and Characters, so they will probably show up.
Right now, the Angels are test-tube-grown from samples of Adam's DNA. They are biologically engineered to appear humanoid (the best infiltration method) but have wetwired enhancements. Internet access, exovision, and free-form energy-based weapons (the lances of light, etc.). But then, I think everyone will have nanomachines in the brain that function as computers. Why? Because I said so, that's why.
Sachiel is the third Angel to show up, but Adam and Lilith were not the first. The first were Gazardiel (my name for the Third Angel in the Rebuild movies) and Shalgiel (Gregg Landsmann's name for the Seventh Angel of the Rebuild movies). Gazardiel is currently held captive and studied by Nerv, while Shalgiel is probably dead.
Aside from maybe Sachiel, most of the Angels are going to get more than one episode, so to speak.
Nerv's PR denounces the Angels as terrorists, but some of the people take a liking to (in an apocalyptic sort of way) and start worshiping the Angels.
In addition to Nerv (which in this case functions as a weapon-technology corporation - think Stark Industries with a TRON spin) and Seele (still the bastard puppetmasters) I'm throwing in a third major group - keeping details to myself though, because that would ruin the surprise. Instrumentality is still the goal, because I think it's not Eva without the Assimilation Plot, and Gendo still reports to the Committee (which reports to the UN/Seele).
Kaji is going to be shown as the competent triple agent that he is.
As well, the Angels are characters more than monsters of the week. I'll let that be for now.
Shinji lives with relatives out somewhere, but comes to Tokyo-2 (the affectionate nickname for Hakone City, which sits above the GeoFront still - Old Tokyo was never bombed (unless we throw that in as part of somethign else going on in the world)) to visit his dad, who is usually busy with work at Nerv. But along the way, Sachiel, identifies him and attacks (recognizing the Ikari name). Rei appears after a brief chase scene and gets Shinji to Nerv, but stays out to fight the Angel. She doesn't have a PLUG Suit on, so she's stuck with hand-to-hand for the most part. Gendo convinces Shinji to put on the new Test-Type PLUG Suit (the suits are DNA-encoded to the first user) and go save her from death. He does. As far as we know, this was an unplanned event and Gendo never intended Shinji to become an Eva.
As far as we know.
And Mari and Mana...well, yeah.

I'm reading some of the extracannonical stuff and unused proposals about Eva. Some of it is very interesting - I might be using some of it.
Also: now I'm thinking of an aborted (or very short) nuclear exchange between Japan and another nation. If nothing else than to provide a sort of tension in the world and a reason Nerv would be so fucking huge. But then Nerv is mutlinational, so that might not work.

You could turn Nerv nations into economic satellites of Japan.

I'll think of something. Might not even have the nuclear exchange just yet.

I think I'll keep the nanomachines functioning as an Internet thing because that makes Israfel and Iruel very, very fun.
