Alright. I'll redtext when I have more time, but I have a proposition for Asuka.
Okay. Since second impact didn't end the world, Asuka's mother never bothered to join Nerv. Infact, she's happily married and works over at Volkswagen. She never went buts and didn't kill herself either. She's also not the hyper bitch from Nobody Dies so Asuka isn't mentally scarred either.
Asuka never got involved with the eva program and is pretty much a slightly spoiled rich kid.
She's still a super genius, but doesn't need to shove it in everyone's faces. She also doesn't go to college early. She meets Shinji and the gang by signing up to be a foreign exchange student. At some point she gets wrapped up in this whole angel business (maybe Shinji has a crush on her and the angels target her or something) and somehow steals unit 2 to impress everyone.
Better yet. She steals it and becomes a super hero with Shinji only finding out about it waaaay later.

that's an interesting butterfly, and I'm tempted to use it, but...there are some things.
Each PLUG Suit is custom made for that particular wearer. The Test-Type Suit was never meant for Rei: it has the digitized soul of Yui within its circuits. Thus, the Production-Model Suit was always meant for Asuka.
But this is Gendo Ikari, we're talking about. And he lies like he breathes.
Maybe she was pulled out (or kept out) of the Eva program by her father and lived in Germany until now, that I might actually use. I'm thinking she didn't find her mother's dead body, AND Kyoko never called a doll Asuka, thus eliminating the childhood trauma. The exchange program happens, and she ends up in Hakone with the other two. I like the stealing the Suit idea, but I'd have to work it so that someone pushed her to it. Gendo is trying to undo eleven years of interference by her father.
The original idea was to have her already using the Production Model (much to the chagrin of Rei, who gets stuck with the Prototype) and be cocky and impatient by the time she gets to Hakone.
But I think I like this version better, so I'll make it work.
There's also some secrets regarding the children that I'm keeping under my hat for now.

but nothing is actually set in stone (for the most part) so I'd welcome and suggestions from either of you - since ONE of you called it "fucking awesome"

Can we also just shove Asuka into the story a bit earlier than the series? This'll let us establish her as a character (I figured she'd be a bit different from what we're used to) and it'll just make it even more awesome when she gets her PLUG suit.

The "prologue arc" won't last nearly as long as the series. Shamshel and Ramiel appear together, although they might retreat and attack twice. Gazardiel breaks out of containment at Matsushiro Research Facility and marches on Hakone, which may be when Asuka saves the day.

think more like a skeleton with muscles and tendons in some places, most of the internal organs, and eyeballs.

not exactly sure what that video had to do with anything, since he's not really a skeleton.
the point of Gazardiel is to be as horrible as possible, to say "This is what Nerv is actually up to!" Since we (and the kids) don't know that the Angels are...well, Angels, and think that they're just human, to see that Nerv would do something like this is a huge kick in the nads.
He's also insane.
when I describe him, I'll make it as nightmare inducing as possible

This idea may be somewhat out of place, but my brain just couldn't leave me be on this issue: How could Japan be this advanced in just 4 years? The answer: Economic superiority. A quick history lesson. During the 70's through early nineties, Japan experienced a major economic boom. tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/JapanTakesOverTheWorldHowever, they soon entered an economic crash and have been toiling in it ever since. Now, my brain decided to go alternate history on this. POD: Japan's economy grows so abnormally fast that they manage to displace America's economic power by 1989. This is accomplished through one very easy thing. The Japanese constitution is amended to allow an offensive military. Granted, their constitution still says that they've "renounced war", but they're still allowed an advanced modern army. This results in Japanese involvement in both the Korean and Vietnamese conflicts which manages to shake up the timeline quite a lot. Essentially, Korea remains a united republic, Vietnam is split and the CCCP is still around to the modern day. The United States never experiences the mass disillusionment of the Vietnam war and continues to exert its military might all over the world to contain communism. However, it soon over exerts itself and it finds itself unable to pay off its massive war debts. The US economy fatally crashes in 1998, triggering a civil war between various parts of the country. Japan, however, remains the world's economic superpower. It exports many of the world's consumer products and is vital to the world economy. Essentially, Japan is what the US is now. The USSR realized that with America out of the picture, they don't really need to blow so much money on their military. Thus, a new focus has been given centered around improving standards of living in all Warsaw Pact countries. The resulting economic climate puts Japan in the perfect condition to be so far ahead of everyone else.

I...was just handwaving it away with Nerv receives stupid amounts of funding to promote Instrumentality, and stuff...but this is a much better explanation!

All that money has to come from somewhere. That and I just love having dirty commies around.
