I've probably brought it up before, that we as a collective should create something besides roleplays. Well, I'm here to say it again, but time with examples! Oh boy, aren't you excited? Yes. Yes you are. I would like to turn your attention to our most recent attempt: Who Wants to be a Hero? in which we all contributed at least one superpowered individual to the fictiona; Veilshroud City.
Now before I continue, I must reference an earlier conversation that has been held at least twice before: that we each have our own styles of writing, styles that developed over the last couple of years and have become prominent to the point where we can basically predict what sort of character each of us will produce.
Let's look at the characters for WWtbaH.
The characters of Alexander Zen and Carlos Knight (the Silver Matador) were both created by Austin/Nergal/Goku. Over the course of the last few years, the characters that have appeared the most often are those that deal with business in way or another: Leon Veralice, Reynold Maldolar (spelling check?), and that guy from Interactive Space. Business and world domination. and/or a cast of quirky side characters that are awesome (see MageCraft Chronicles).
Derrick has sort of been in and out of the site for its entirety, but what I can say is that you do things the rest of us don't. When we had Awesome Land, you made Scion. The character Cyril Balthazem (Malignant #134) is yours for WWtbaH and hinges on an Eldrich, extradimensional being residing within a human. No one else here would even dare to attempt something like that.
Nicole likes to create the female characters, although this comes as an unfortunate side effect of being surrounded by males, who have more experience with male characters. Your characters are either insecure (Natalie Simmons/Toast Girl, that one chick from Awesome Lane) or completely ball-to-the-wall insane (Cow Girl).
Adam often opts for the dark and gritty back story, like with Nathan Greystone/Railgun. Orphaned, abandoned, forced to live on the streets. Recently you have put more emphasis on military characters, as with Machina Ex Deus. Or you do Zais. I love/miss Zais. Oftentimes, you characters are more serious about matters than the rest of ours, sort of a counter to Austin, who likes to inject humor. But that does not mean you are a buzzkill - no, it means that you are the straight man if that role hasn't been filled.
I won't try an analyze myself (you guys can do that for me if you want) but I do know that my main character from WWtbaH is Aaron Stillman/Shade, who is caught in a conflict with his powers. Personally, a lot of my characters have a tendency towards redemption or reconciliation (Martin, Adden, Vi'ir from Magecraft). I've been told I write with a romantic style (the old definition - use wikipeida) as well as delving into backstories a lot.
Wesley has admitted to creating tragic characters. I say he makes interesting/unique/weird characters. Either way, he gave us Amnesia Journeys, so that's pretty cool.
Hopefully, I haven't offended anyone, as that wasn't my intention - I merely wished to point out how each of us has a style that we (most likely unconsciously) write with. Now, with those specialties/styles/genres/whathaveyou talked about (at least from my perspective, I now bring you to my main point: We Should Write Actual Fiction For Publication.
There, I said it. I think we should. We work well together (we can shoot down ideas without murdering one another) we all enjoy writing (I mean, I hope we do) and I think this (YourStory) site is proof enough of our abilities (if not our work ethic or attention span). We need to work on that.
But aside from that, I think that if we all put our collective brains together, we could make something awesome. Oh wait, we have. Several times. Awesome Land. Amnesia Journeys. The MageCraft Chronicles. The only thing is that none of that was published. Also it was rough.
But all of us together, making plot(s) characters (loads and loads) could do something awesome and I don't think we should waste whatever potential we have.
Anyone? Yes? No?
